Vrs noisy water pump, how long will it last?

Don't know if anyone can really advise on this but i'll ask anyway. Think the water pump is on the way out on my VRS, at least i think that's what it  is going by the info i've looked at on the briskoda forums and other sites. Only trouble is, i can't get it booked into a garage anywhere where i live until 26th Sept. It started getting noisy about 3 or 4 days ago. Do they tend to still go on for a while or could it be immeneint failure? I'm not planning any long trips, just likely short trips in the town i live in over next couple of weeks. Thanks for any thoughts on this

Maybe not this week, maybe long enough.

Maybe you will floor the accelerator and the car will go into limp mode.  Supercharger Clutch / waterpump.  Misfires.

So drive easy and watch there is no coolant loss, even a ickle amount.

There is no yes or no answer sadly.

The fact your water pump could fail any time and as its timing belt driven, can cause engine failure.

If any part of the camshaft drive system is noisy, get it sorted instantly, dont wait around.

It is a timing chain with a 1.4TSI 132 kW Twincharger. 2009-2014.

2 Belts with the Waterpump / supercharger magnetic clutch.

The failure that worried me was outside lane giving it full beans and into Limp Mode.   No engine wrecking, just cleaning of seat and underwear binned.

Mibbae aye, mibbae nay. I'm not going to give you a definite answer beyond "STOP NOW" if the water temperature suddenly starts climbing.

@nez1971

What age and miles is your car.  CAVE or CTHE.

Parts became cheaper, but be sure who gets them and fits knows what they are doing.

Vid on here of why you have a noise if it is the water pimp.   (be sure not the timing chain tensioner. there is an issue there with a CTHE from 2012 on.)

EDIT.

i see it is a 2014.

Its a 64 CTHE, only on 30k. Yeah, i'm fussy about where i take it, which means less choice and probably higher price. Skoda dealer is £96 per hour for diagnosis, although they reckon it won't take an hour. £499 to do water pump if thats what it is!

First 30 minutes of Diagnosis is £60 at a participating dealers.    No need for them to milk it.

My linked post / thread tells how much i had paid.   They can take the diagnosis of the price if you are telling them to change the water pump, 2 belts, seal and coolant.

I knew what was wrong,

but there was a reason i had the car at a Main Dealers.

they did say might only take 30 mins for diagnosis, but if they say it took an hour how do i argue that? They didn't say anything about taking the cost of the diagnosis off the price of the work. Will certainly asked about that

If the Technician is just going to get on and do the job once the car is in then the diagnosis charge is taking the pith.

Maybe the connector has corrosion, maybe he can diagnose something else as well and want to measure the Timing Chain.

But if it is the Water Pump then from getting the car into the workshop and pulling on their gloves they know the water pump needs changing.

Simple as that.

They will plug in, get the fault codes logged if any and even if stopping 10 minutes to have a coffee and make a phone call they know within 30 minutes.

Only with me could they not diagnose in 60 minutes and wanted permission for another hour.

I do point out that a kick in the balls hurts if they want to go down that line.

I am kind of in the hands of the dealership really, assuming that'ss where i go. I've only had regular servicing done there before so don't know what they're like with this kind of thing. Only one other skoda specialist round here that i know of, which is where i'm booked at the moment for the 26th. I know him and had work done there before...that was on  BMW. I know he won't rip off and is a slightly cheaper than the dealership. The only thing is that wait to get it done

You could do the job yourself in honesty if time is an issue @Mickmartindid it on his drive, also the coolant pump is not on the timing chain its driven by the crankshaft pulley so I would drive it till need be just would monitor coolant loss /temp 421B973C-3069-41A7-A1D6-C96F6012C07E.thumb.png.64a811260413b325e743c2e9b031c184.png

  • 2 weeks later...

So my car did last until today, 26th Sept, stuck with independant garage, Skoda garage couldn't get it in earlier, then they were talking about booking it for diagnostic...and then booking in again for any work to be done, 🙄

Turns out it is the water pump. Should get it back tomorrow, job done...hopefully
