runs rough and struggles to accelerate

Featured Replies

Hi there,

So my wife's car ( MK2 Fabia VRS) was struggling to accelerate for a while, so i gave it a service and everything was back to normal for a few days, but then, one morning it started up on only 3 cylinders. once it was warm it then ran on all four and drove as it should.

Now a few months later ( and a LOT of head scratching later ) it starts on 2/3 cylinders on most morning and even when it is running on all 4 it still struggles to accelerate under full throttle.

its had 4 new plugs (£25 each), 4 new coil packs, a full oil and filter change ( inc fuel filter).

I'm ready to burn this car as I'm at my whits end. Any help or advice would be great.

\first things I'd have done. Now check the fault codes first, but I think you may need to change injectors.

Forgot to mention that there are NO codes stored ( which is confusing).

And the injectors is my next stop, just wanted a 2nd option.

Also this is a Petrol VRS

Looks a 1.4 twincharger engine to me...

Try changing the ECT sensor if it seems temperature sensitive.

where will this be located on this engine?

is it on the water distribution block?

Paying double the price for spark plugs than was necessary was not smart.   What were they, and  at what gap are they.

Or throwing parts at it.

So tell us what age. 2010-2012 or 2012 on.  CAVE or CTHE.

What did the plugs at came out look like, was one fouled or the tip burnt?

It's a 2011 CAVE, Plugs were a NGK but I can't remember what cap they were ( it's been a while)

the plugs have been in the car about 3 months now, but the issue came back after about a week of them being changed.

Which is common, or can be if you have the O rings not sealed when putting the pipes back on.

Usually the same day though.

Or the EPC or Engine Light on or both and still no Misfires logged if not enough in a cycle.

Take all 4 plugs out, inspect, check gap and oil / soot and be sure you never knocked one putting them in.

what gapping should the plugs be?

You put them in, did you not check the pre set gap of the plugs.

They used to be at 0.8, they changed to 0.7 when the plugs were changed for different ones.

I have never used them as i used DENSO first @ 0.8 but then when remapped at 0.6

Don't think it will make it that far without doing more damage, but thanks for the offer.

If I can get it to run some kind of right I'll let you know and pop over.

No problem John just to let you know mate I have four unfitted uprated spark plugs gapped at 0.6mm that I was gonna fit at my next service if you need to try anything different you can just give me what I paid for them from OPIE oils (it was a damn site cheaper than what you paid from those stealers)

Also those spark plugs from euros are not right you want these that’s probably why your car isn’t working correctly 67C22839-ABF0-499B-A402-5E5510F05CF8.jpeg.aabda252b10b5a30cf26f73d65a32c82.jpeg

How can you tell? All I can see on the Euro page is a stock number, not a plug code like on your quoted Fleabay page.

@thomasaspin @sepulchrave - Now I can tell that "NGK Part No - SIZFR6B8EG" is a different plug grade to what @johnmlilley actually needs. John, fit the right plugs for the engine first; that will definitely help even if it's not a complete cure.

The cars left the factory with OEM plugs, these were changed for CAVE cars having spark plugs changed from 2010-2012 & CTHE in 2012.

That was changed to NGK SIZFRB8FG / 03C905601B  0.7 mm gap

(OEM had been NGK 03C9050601A  0.8 mm gap)

There were still crap for a 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136kW

A member has done a most excellent guide.

As well to have a Coil removal tool. and do not burst breather pipes or hoses as has been common. Even when a Dealership is changing your spark plugs.

Make sure all are put back correctly.
