Camcorder Question

Featured Replies

I have an 8mm Sony CCD-TR54 NTSC Camcorder, its a friends with footage of us in the US a few years back.

The camcorder doesn't seem to want to power up, also it doesn't have Firewire so I'd rather not use it.

So,

Can these tapes be played in modern camcorders ?,

a work collegue thinks camcorders are backward compatible, ie (I hope this is right), a Hi8 plays Digital 8 & 8mm.

I know its an NTSC but will a camcorder play both ?

Can a 8mm one be transferred via Firewire ? I hope so otherwise there be a lot of editing (theres about 10 tapes)

I got another friends camcorder, its a Sony but dunno what type, with the NTSC tape in its coming up with a blue screen as if blank.

Help please.

Not sure if it helps but my Sony handycam instructions say it will ONLY play Mini DV tapes. So, not sure if similar modern camcorders will play older tapes?

My sony camcorder is Mini-DV only I'm afraid.

I got some help from Sony Online service, you can play 8mm tape on Digital 8 camcorder if it was recorded on Digital 8 camcorder but your not able to play a 8mm tape on a Digital 8 camcorder if recorded on an 8mm Camcorder.

From what I gather its a no go with playing a NTSC on a PAL player.

As its dated technology you might find an old one come up on fleabay?

I'd probably be better off not finding one , theres about 10 tapes, with about 99% rubbish on them. It would mean going through everything  . At least with modern stuff it could be broken into start/stop sections.

The customer care gave me a reset procedure to try on the broken camcorder.
