H7 Halogen bulbs last no time at all

Featured Replies

Don't know 100% if Oct Mk3 is the same with same option set, but on my car with BiXennon lamps standard, the dynamic cornering light is a H7 Halogen.

Sounds crazy to me but I have replaced 2 x sets of Philips White Vision Ultra in 16 Months. One set lasted May to March, the next set, March to November.

We don't even do a lot of night time driving so the recent March to November stint, they've only just started to be used again.

Do others find the philips white vision H7 just do not last (either in this application or normal dipped beam)?  I can't imagine I am getting much more than 200 hours life!

Hint in the use case I think; you're effectively pulsating these bulbs on and off whenever you turn a corner with the headlights on.

Yeah. I can notice them come on sometimes. Certainly in drive even stationary turning wheel one way, one side comes on. So you think any h7 halogen will die inside a year? Tks for reply.

No, mine have lasted 3 years since changing to LHD headlights and the original ones looked like they still had the original bulbs, cornering lights are activated on my vehicle.

Yes; pulsating or flashing any Quartz-Halogen, or even tungsten vapour, bulb regularly will reduce its lifespan.

Thanks for replies both. - I guess it comes down to how much you turn the steering wheel!! 🙃 !!!

Edit. Maybe I will try a different brand this time. Just to be sure it is not related or I'm dealing with counterfeits or so something supply related.

I think ring or someone do a long life H7. They will just be standard types not ultra white etc

Thank you, yes also found some long life osram and long life philips after your post suggesting. May try a set of one of them. It they last 3 or 4 times longer and I got say 1.5yrs to 2 yrs I think I'd be happy. 6 months replacement at £25 a pair so 50 a year seems silly just for cornering lamps!! Tks

Don't go for high power versions. They don't last anywhere as long. Cheap standard fit ones are best for this application.  Also as fog lights they won't flood the space with light when needed (in fog) so you will actually be able to see.

Yeah thanks. The ones I have been fitting, philips white vision ultra, were standard output 55w - just halogen with gas to make them whiter.  But yes, now ordered some long life standard yellow halogens from Osram advertised for 4 year life.. .So we will see.  I'll try to resurrect this post when I find out how long they last!! Thanks

My MB & LB lights are both H7's (55w), as I bought the SE spec, purposely. I uprated my halogen bulbs to Lidl's 100 brighter bulbs, I bought a few twin packs of H7's when they had them on offer for a fiver a box, used them on different cars, too. Seem to last well & they're made in Germany. So may be worth keeping an eye out for when they're next on offer. I've never blown a set either, even when I'd replaced them on a different make of car & ran them for over year until I bought my Octavia. They seem equally as bright as a previous set of Osram 150's I also fitted a few years ago, but the Lidl bulbs were a quarter of the price. I wouldn't say they're white though, maybe a little whiter than stock bulbs & a bit brighter.

Owned from near new my previous 2003 Superb mk I always had terrible headlights with H7 Dipped beam projector lens headlights so I tried various "brighter" bulbs including Osram Silverstar's. The bulbs never lasted that long with both sides failing within weeks of each other so I got into the habit of changing both if one had failed as it was a fairly fiddly procedure on that car.

The headlights on it's replacement Superb II also with H7 Dipped beam projector lens headlights are considerably better so I never bothered with brighter bulbs. When the originals failed I was away from home on both occasions about to embark on long journeys so I popped into a local Halfords and asked them to change the relevant bulb and they suggested the long life H7 and to be fair they still perform well and have since lasted many years.
