Do yourself maintenance of haldex gen5

Featured Replies

As soon as the oil (febi 101172) arrives, I will buy a syringe and go to a rental box to carry out maintenance on the haldex gen 5 and clean the "filter" that the official service does not do.  Any advice or experience to consider??  Thank you!

after 1st fill, do the adapation and run the car a bit. Then fill another time, you should get another 100ml in.

It’s fairly straightforward. You need to release the cable between the control module and the pump, attached by clips that slide out, and disconnect the cable at the module. I found this difficult to do because I didn’t really understand how to release the connector, so I just undid the control module (2 screws I think).

One is supposed to replace the O rings on the pump body but I didn’t bother, and no leaks.

I have seen a video in which they do not disconnect the pump and clean it with it connected.

Is it valid or is it better to remove it?

Can I start and gear up with the car on the lift or is it better to take it out and drive around the block?

Would this answer your questions? ;)

Feel free to ask if something is still unclear.  ;)

For me there wasn’t enough slack in the cable to get the pump out without disconnecting or at least undoing the control module. But if you can get the pump out, that is all that is required. You can unscrew the plastic filter and clean it elsewhere.

You jut need to activate the Haldex pump after filling, to check the level. You can do this with VCDS (engine has to be running) but probably putting it into gear and revving a bit on the lift will do it too.

Oh yea one other thing, the filler plug is made of cheese, best to get a new one.

VAG recommends to replace it, indeed.

I found it easier to disconnect the pump to have confortable access to clean the pump and its' gauge filter.

In my "How to guide", I give a tip to unplug its connector easily.

You can buy a haldex gen 5 service kit with all required parts at a very good price on eBay.

run the required actuation after to pre fill the pump and then put more fluid in.

the 2 o rings on the pump are very slightly different sizes

replace the washers and plugs

Doesn't the pump prime when you cycle the ignition switch?

I'm pretty sure that mine did and when I rechecked the level as a precaution after a test drive it could not take any more fluid.

This was of course after  learning the hard way which hole is which! 😳

Thank you all!!

I have found this kit at a good price (it's a pity about Brexit that they charge me import costs) but it works out better than buying the oil, gaskets and screws separately at Autodoc.es. Thank you very much, I will comment when I do my experience.

Maybe, but you have to be careful which gen of Haldex you are talking about, early ones had a pressurised reservoir, gen 5 doesn’t. But anyway, I just checked Skoda’s own service instructions and for both and oil change and a pump change, it just says to fill the oil to the level, it doesn’t mention running the pump. I guess there is very little oil retained in the actual pump on gen 5. And you are allowed up to 3mm below the hole.

A 0.85l bottle doesn't give you much margin if something goes wrong. The maintenance manual recommends 700-720ml.

A 1.0l bottle would be wiser. ;)

I don't have vcds and with obd11 I think there are too many steps to confuse and create bigger problems.  I have seen and read maintenance in which it is not necessary to activate the pump.

Can it be done without doing it?

Fortunately, yes, it can.

When I did it, I did not use VCDS. Just follow my tutorial, it will be ok. ;)

Afortunadamente, sí, se puede.

Cuando lo hice, no usé VCDS. Solo sigue mi tutorial, estará bien./cdn-cgi/mirage/a72759658eb1804ce1c8b7307e98775ad54e8f975f7a4f10a2fc6889db85e744/1280/https://www.briskoda.net/forums/uploads/emoticons/emoticon-0105-wink.gif

I'm doing it right now and in fact I need urgent help because it doesn't take oil from the filler cap, even removing the drain plug the oil doesn't come out there.  I have started the car but it still does not get oil from the filler cap I do not know what to do.

God how stupid!!  I have removed the one that is not!?

Well, it's done! Except for my stupidity when confusing the drain screw, I have not had any complications. I have removed the cable supports, the pump ... I cannot say how much oil has entered but after starting it they have entered just over 50cl. In general it is quite simple, even more than a change of engine oil. The car has just 70,000 km and is the second oil change of the Haldex and the first cleaning of the filter.

I have to drive a few kms like this to the service...

You really need to fill the diff with the correct oil before driving anywhere.

Listen, DO NOT DRIVE IT.

you have messed up somewhere, drained the diff and either filed that with haldex oil or you’ve drained the haldex via the pump as well. In which case you’ve done something big time wrong.

if you drive it you risk £1000s in damages with a destroyed haldex pump, clutch and rear diff….
