big brake kit on skoda scala

Featured Replies

So i started today with upgrading the front big brake. Installing it was plug and play but then:

The outer joint of the drive shaft is too short for the Polo Bearing hub. I think it’s the mentioned 9mm. So replace with Audi or keep original. I recommend to replace the bearing.

Afterwards you have to adjust the steering. If not you ride like on pudding.

At the very end you have about 70 errors on VCDS. The very important is the Speedsensor: wrong component installed.

So we will try to use the Scalas Speedsensor on Monday.

Driving now is nearly impossible, too dangerous. And keep on mind, to have transmission in „P“ before unplug Speedsensor. I will update you on Monday (hopefully)

Update: Installed the Scalas Speed Sensor and no error codes anymore. Transmission was on „P“ and this error is gone too.

The Audi A1 and Polo MK6 GTI use different 312x25mm front brake discs.

The Polo MK6 GTI front brake disc is about 4.5mm wider...as shown in the diagrams below.

Which ones are you using?

If you are using the Audi A1/Skoda Scala wheel bearing 2Q0407621A rather than the Polo MK6 GTI wheel bearing 2Q0407621B (which I believe you have to, otherwise the Scala driveshaft would be too short to work with the Polo MK6 GTI wheel bearing), it looks like you need the 2Q0615301J front brake discs...otherwise I suspect the brake caliper slider would be about 4.5mm further pushed into the wheelarch than it should be.

@Carlston Indeed, like i already said, the joint of the drive shaft is shorter, but not too short.

@Carlston I am about to install the complete rear axle from Polo GTI during holidays. When i have to lift the car anyway i want to replace front Discs too.

so i have the bearing from Polo GTI, index B. You said, to get rid off the short drive shaft issue, i have to use 2Q0615301J discs. Just wanted to check again so i am not mistaken.

thanks in advance for your reply

So finally i installed the rear axle from Polo AW1 GTI.

My Experience comparing the BQ and BF axle is:

Wheelbase is the same

Mounting holes for brake caliper carrier are exactly the same

There is more negative camber

The axle itself weighs a few kilos less and the continuous height of the crossbar has only 8cm, instead of 9.5cm as with the BQ. Means the Scalas BQ Axle can carry more weight.

So actually it’s not necessary to change the whole axle like @Carlston recommended. Tell me if i am wrong.

When you have a trailer hitch, better keep the original BQ rear axle, when you want to have a little bit negative camber, the BF is recommended.

Pictures will follow

Look forward to pictures.
Could you please share cost of this retrofit and a list of changed spare parts?

The costs were: €500 for complete used rear axle. €60 2 component 3 layer color for brakes. €170 aligning track. New Zimmermann discs 80€. New ATE pads 35€.

i have good friends, one is car painter and the other is mechanic, so i just paid the parts except track alignment.

Here the Pictures🙂

I expect the following parts from the Audi A1 MK2 will fit, so you would have 312x25mm front brake discs. However, when you do these kinds of modifications there's always room for some unexpected problems especially if no one else has done this particular modification before.

If you already have 276x24mm front brake discs instead of the smaller 256x22mm front brake discs you will already have "2Q0407621A Wheelhub with bearing" which you should be able to re-use.

The parts are the same from the VW Polo MK6 GTI except for the "2Q0407621A Wheelhub with bearing" and the "2Q0615301J Brake disc 312X25" being different. If you use the VW Polo MK6 GTI version of these parts you will increase the front track by about 9mm. I suggest you use the Audi A1 parts which should keep the front track standard.

@Carlston Hello there and thank you for the infos you shared. These part numbers are very helpful.

I would like to ask you about my car, if you know.

Its a scala 1.0 gtec 2020 model, with 256 front discs and i need upgrade the front and the rear brake system. So i have to change the front steering knuckles with the polo aw gti that doesnt have the built in carrier, right?

The diameter of the front shock absorber of my scala and the polo aw mk6 gti are the same?

Also the part number of the steering knuckles, as you said are 2q0407256L and 2q0407255L.

At the lllparts i see that part number have been replaced with the 2Q0407255AE.

Are these the same?

Also i would like to know if i can use the 16' alaris rim with the 312 discs, or i will be forced to use only my summer rims 18'

Thank you in advance. ☺️

16" rims will clear the front brake calipers on 312x25mm front brake discs.

All of the front shock absorbers on the Scala and Polo MK6 (and Audi A1 based on the Polo MK6) use the same diameter struts.

Don't use Polo MK6 GTI front wheel bearings because those require Polo MK6 GTI drive shafts which are longer than the other Polo models.

These 312x25mm front and 272x10mm rear brakes are both TRW brake systems.

The 256x22mm front brakes use a 22.2mm master cylinder bore, whereas the 276x24mm and 312x25mm front brakes use a 23.8mm master cylinder bore. So you might want to consider changing the master cylinder if increasing the size of the 256x22mm front brakes. However, it looks like the servo is also different...and there might also be other differences.

Thanks for your anwser.

It looks like more complicated than i thought.

More complicated if i want to install big brake kit like Ap or Alcon.

What do you think about the wheel bearing housing?

The lllparts says that 2q0407255L & 2q0407256L are replaced with the 2q0407255AE & 2q0407256AE.

I found both part numbers available, are these 2 the same items?

The Polo MK6 parts catalogue lists 2Q0407255L, 2Q0407256L, 2Q0407255AE, and 2Q0407256AE...with the AE version being a newer version of the older L version. Cars manufactured after 25/05/2020 used the newer AE version instead of the older L version. It seems likely that they are interchangeable.

I see.

I have another question.

The servo as you said, is different.

Can i use the 23.8mm master cylinder bore with my servo, and if so, what im going to earn, or lose with that move?

If i will stay with the same servo and master cylinder bore, the feeling on the brake pedal will be to soft?

If im going to use bigger calipers, 4pot or 6pot for example, with larger pistons in diameter, is there a method to calculate the master cylinder bore that i will need, and is there any part from the group that it will fit in my brake system?

Thank you again for the help ☺️
