ONE sidelight issue / temperamental

Featured Replies

Yes, recently noticed the NSF side light not working. (CanBus not affected by sidelights)

I put in another bulb and sometimes it illuminates and sometimes it doesn't. ie, I might switch the side lights on and just the drivers side bulb illuminates ........ but if I then turn the headlights on the nsf sidelight will illuminate.

Occasionally it may illuminate just on the sidelight only, but temperamental.

IT SEEMS to be a switch problem ............ is this likely to affect JUST ONE sidelight ?????????? (I would have thought NOT ??????????

(I have the headlight out at the moment and looking at how to remove the switch, in the meantime any helpful replies appreciated.

Thanks

Is this for an Octy mk1 or a mk2?  I've had occasional problems with an intermittent sidelight on a mk2 and the situation was definitely picked up by the controller, which then turned the offending unit off and showed a 'bulb out' on the dash.  The situation then cleared after ignition cycle and came back later.  In that specific instance I felt a poor earth was responsible and after some cleaning up all was well.

Thanks .... Yes, Mk2 Mike.

I've had led sidelights in for years (without issues) and for some reason I was convinced that the canbus did not cover these in my 55 plate.

So .......... in further trials just now (removing the bulb and it not illuminating) it seems it does show up on the dash (with ignition on)

Weird, as I know the illumination has been temperamental for a week or more now and never shown bulb out on dash before today's trials.

I can switch the lights on and (the sidelight) will illuminate for a few seconds but then go off -(edited)

Anyway, If you can elaborate on where I would find the 'earth' or what connections I need to clean up, it would be appreciated.

It's a while since I did this and a couple of cars back but as I recall I identified the earth lead from the sidelight (Brown, according to the diagram and commoned with the main beam - object #30 near the bottom of the diagram) and followed it back to an earthing point on the body (E2 IIRC).  The point was OK but showed some signs of corrosion so I gave it and the connector a good scrub and reassembled with Vaseline.

My thinking at the time was that the sidelight bulb being only a low current draw could be more susceptible to built-up resistance due to corrosion that would a headlamp drawing several amps - hence the intermittent problem on sidelight only.  I didn't look for any empirical evidence (resistance etc.) so it remains "my theory, which is ..." :)

Thanks Mike ........

One (yet another job) for another day next week then I think ............... Thanks for the help .............

Best wishes for a great Christmas. :)

Oxidised bulb connections needing a clean.

On the +12 side of bulb holder chec ( with DVM) that you have circa 12v going to holder( - side of meter to good earth/ battery neg), + side of meter to holder. Then Check out of negative side of holder with meter positive. Reading should be zero. Check bulb and if good fault is elsewhere. But if negative side of holder shows voltage, then set meter to amps( high steering) and check for a current of approx .5A and lamp lighting. If so, try pplying good earth to negative side of holder as I'd suggest that holder earth is dodgy.

I haven't sorted yet due to crappy weather

I will let you know what cures it (hoping) and as MOT is due next month I may have to look at it in works car park ........ under cover, Lol.

Hi Mike,

So it worked after you cleaned those contacts? I’ve have a similar issue where when I’ve my LED side lights on but once I engage the LED full beams the parks will go off but at random periods of time sometimes straight away other times after 2 mins. I can then turn all the lights off and on without the full beams and voila the side lights work again lol. Bulb error appears on dash once they go out and it’s an electrical fault according to vcds. Would be lead to believe it’s the problem you’ve solved with the Earth contacts! Where abouts are the headlight earths? I take it their E2 and E8.

 Thanks Mike

@MikeTheThinker ............

Finally got into looking at this today and there is a long black ridged box right above said earthing points. (not sure if it is filter box) Has the big hose at the back of it.

I was hoping to remove this box as otherwise, access to the earth points is too difficult,.even with the headlight removed. Blummin weather real pita atm.

I remember removing this cover before, but this was years ago, and now some of the screw heads are buggered / rusted and I cannot undo them.

Can this box be removed as a whole, ie, without getting inside it, and if so are there any complications, as I see a hose (or wiring ???) coming out from the underside.

Any further advice gratefully received ............. and anyone else with advice on this.

(For VWD ... I do not really do elec testing but cannot really see why the holder should have a fault as this is totally encased from the weather. Appreciate input tho.)

The earth points are very vulnerable to the weather though so this makes sense at least.

Update for anyone interested, and helpful parties ........ :)

After finally managing to remove the airbox (made more difficult with rusted screw heads, before my work colleague said it can be removed without opening it up)

And finding an allen key in my bike bag that fitted the removal bolt (as most of my tools and bits are at work) after searching for ages

There is at least three earth bolts in the vicinity of E2 and none of these looked in bad condition at all. I still removed all three and cleaned them up.

The cabling is too difficult to follow the earth as it is all wound with tape and plastic sleeving. The tape would be difficult to remove and recover properly and difficult anyway without removing the whole battery and holder assembly.

I also wiggled all of the connectors that I could get a grip on, just in case.

The bulb that was in already, still has the same issue, but another (different type but still led) bulb that I had tried previously as well ............. now seems to work ok.

I'm hoping this at least gets the car through the mot ......... and then time will tell, I guess.

Soooooo looking forward to getting something newer .............. here's hoping.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Oh, and I got the grinder out and put slots in the airbox screw heads for ease of removal should the need arise.
