Rim protection on 19" extremes

Recommended Posts

Who has 235s over the standard 225s and is there a lot more rim protection?

Wondering if I should put 235s on the rear as they need replacing, then 235s on the front when they are required, or just stick with 225s!?

The width of a 225/35R19 tyre fitted to 7.5J rim is about 224mm.

The width of a 235/35R19 tyre fitted to 7.5J rim is about 230mm.

Therefore, the sidewalls will bulge out by about 3mm more each side if you change from 225/35R19 to 235/35R19 on 7.5J rims.

However, ETRTO don't approve the fitment of a 235/35 tyre to a 7.5J rim. They specify an 8J rim as the minimum rim width for that tyre size as shown in the chart below.

ETRTO approved rim widths

225/35 7.5-8.0-9.0
235/35 8.0-8.5-9.5

I've had 235s on mine for over 3 years. The Xtreme rim is 8.0J.

According to the Skoda parts catalogue the Xtreme rims are 7.5J. "skoda eshop cz" also shows them as being 7.5J. A tyre fitter could refuse to fit a 235/35 tyre to a 7.5J rim. You might want to check with a local tyre fitter to make sure he would fit a 235/35 tyre to a 7.5J rim before making a purchase.

I used this information, apologies if it's incorrect.

There's a lot of incorrect information on that listing.

They claim its an 8Jx19 ET41 rim that needs a 235/45R19 tyre for the Octavia MK3.

It's actually a 7.5Jx19 ET51 rim that needs a 225/35R19 tyre for the Octavia MK3.

It is 7.5J, but @RoddersUK 235/35 tyres fit with absolutely zero issues and do provide better (even if just 3mm) sidewall protection from pesky hard things - albeit my Xtremes are already ruined due to standard 'whiteworm', gravel rash, and concrete parking space delineations 🙄

There should be zero perceptible change, unsure if it'd be physically related 👍 - unless you buy a different profile (i.e., instead of 35, you get 45 or some other odd sizing).

The ratio the speedo is out is 1% on the sites I have seen that compares tyre circumferences.

I have 235 Asy 5 fitted with zero issues. I might switch to the Asy 6 225 section tyres as the rubber is less dense at 88 rather than 91 load rating. The 235 are a heavier tyre than the 225 and as such will have more rotational mass.

235's also look soooo much better than the 225's which look stretched IMO.

Ive been running 235's for a few thousand miles with no adverse reactions. The tyres were cheaper and its a more standard size meaning if you need one in an emergency I would imagine its easier to get a replacement.

In terms of increases in comfort or grip its minimal and to answer your question, it barely gives any extra protection over a 225.

If you want to check speedo error try willtheyfit.com, looking at it it says there will be less than half a MPH decrease at 30mph due to a slightly bigger circumference (meaning you'll be going under the shown speed) on a 235 over a 225, its so marginal it wont make a difference.
