Android Head unit upgrade from Bolero

Featured Replies

Hi all hoping someone can help me as I am clueless atm!

I have just bought an android head unit from Amazon and I am trying to connect it to the car. The problem I am having is the connector for the original bolero power does not connect to the current android and I am wondering what kind of adaptor I may need? Have attached screenshots of the connections and everything below.

the Android connects to the back of the bolero under the glove compartment, however the picture of the white connector that powers the screen does not fit and I haven’t a clue what adaptor I would need or if it will even work at all. Canbus etc supplied but just can’t seem to get power to the new Android because of different cables than the bolero. Picture 1 is the connector from the screen of the bolero. Picture 2 is the new Android head unit with connectors. Picture 3 is the back of the bolero screen with the connector that I don’t have! If anyone has any ideas on how to connect please let me know! Thanks in advance.

Connector that is under the glove compartment

You need the adaptor to go from the glovebox unit to the new unit in the middle. Can't remember what you do with the screen cables in the middle at the mo. You need to reroute the glovebox cables. They are the important ones.

Many thanks for the reply Mark! I have no probs connecting to wire under glove box etc but there is still no power going to the screen. I must be missing some sort of adaptor as under the glove box when I have the connection with CANbus connected - there is still no power getting to the screen. Headwrecker it is!

Is the android unit a split system (separate screen)? If all in one then the cables in the glovebox need to plug into the unit in the dash. If a split system then it should have come with the relevant cables to join the two units.

Yeah so the Android unit is just by itself has everything built in processor etc and these are all of the cables provided with - not sure whether split unit system or not but the power cable for the android unit is connected to the glove box and still no power going to - and both cables in mid console where usually connects to bolero screen are still left unused.

I would suggest that the pins are wrong. Maybe even not the right cable or unit for your car.

Looking at the facia the android unit is built into, it looks to be designed for a MK2 Octavia rather than a MK3 - does it even fit regardless of the power issues?

Yeah fits perfect, just need to remove the trim around the ac plugs and it just clicks in. I am only looking through videos now and didn’t actually turn on the ignition when I had it connected at first, not holding out that that was the reason why because current bolero system turns on just by switching on the electrics, so not hopeful but will try again regardless. As to why there is two main connections I have no clue either but did try both also, again not by turning ignition just by turning on electrics.

The mani connector is QuadLock - the one with 52 pins, connected to original glove box unit. The ones that are in th emid console (4 pins white and 12 pins black) and not relevant for you as they are just for communication between original glove box unit and original display unit.

Thanks for the reply pab much appreciated! So both cables I have are the wrong ones and I need a quad lock is that right? Or is one of the cables I have to connect to glove box unit sufficient?

You don't want to connect to the glove box unit. That is the old system that the android one is replacing.

Even more lost now ahah, so I have all of the bolero taken out, the glove box unit and the screen itself, so just cables left the big connector that hangs from glovebox one with numerous different connections that the bolero unit would usually connect and then as pab mentioned the 12 pin black and 4 pin white is in the centre console for the screen. So I don’t want to be connecting to the glove box at all and rather connect to the centre console cables? Is that right cause would make sense as these the cables that do not fit and will need an adaptor.

Update - have tried connecting both cables pictured above to the main 52 pin connector in the glove box and still no joy - still no power getting to the android unit. Clueless is the word.

Looking at the text on that VW-RZ-01 adaptor, I don't think it supports MQB cars. All the dates line up with PQ35 cars.

I'd suggest you contact the seller for advice.

Thanks for the reply! This is the CANbus yeah? And if this was the wrong one would this stop it from powering on and **** yeah?

The quadlock cable (big square one) in the glovebox is what you need to connect to the new unit. You either need an extension or to reroute it to the centre console.

This is assuming you have the right parts for your car which is sounding increasingly unlikely.

Can we ask what you are trying to achieve by fitting the android unit?

It's an adaptor that listens to the CAN-bus and will then tell the headunit to power up etc.

If it's designed for an older PQ35 car, it may never get the right messages to turn the headunit on. You need a convertor designed for MQB cars.

At least that's my best guess based on the text - quick google translate:

Yeah I have tried connecting both to the quad lock cable just to even see if it will power on but still nothing? Starting to wonder if there is another quad lock connected somewhere behind the dash?

And yeah of course I am literally just trying to replace the bolero unit to the Android to get air play, navigation, Spotify etc, currently on the bolero I only have Bluetooth and radio.

@langers2kahhh legend man didn’t even think that could be the issue and makes sense now. I’ll get onto the seller to get one sent out cause was advertised 2009-2013. Don’t suppose these are something that are readily available and prob need be ordered yeah?

I'm 100% convinced it's for a MK2 Octavia not a MK3 - based on the included convertor and the panel being a perfect match for a MK2 manual AC panel:

That's definitely a MK2 version, you need a MK3 one so return it all and buy the correct version for your car

Might be worth having a look through this thread for ideas of which android head-units people have fitted:
