Monte Carlo 2014 - tyres

Featured Replies

Hello. New here. Be gentle with me.

My heart is breaking at having to part with my 2006 Fabia 1.2 😢. Even moreso as it's likely to end up at the scrap merchants.

Just about to buy a Monte Carlo. It wasn't intentional, it was just that it was the first Skoda I called about that hadn't already gone. 🫤

It has low profile tyres, which I'm not keen on because of pot holes etc.

Question:

Would you change the tyres if 'twere you? 🤔

What is the actual size of the tyres it has?

Embarrassing... I did look but can't remember. I think 14.

Upgraded Fabia's have bigger alloy/ wheels and low profile tyres fitted as standard linked too the performance and handling, so changing the tyres to a different profile is not really a good idea, also it will effect the fuel and speed of the car, we have a mk3 fabia which i thought might have 16 inch rims but turns out they are 17 admittidly i don't really like the low profile as they are more prone to damage than the standard wheel size but hay ho that's how it is would not recommend swapping for normal tyre size might be a bad move in the long run, PS can also effect your insurance if you have a accident if non standard size wheels and tyres are fitted to the car worth thinking about

In the UK a Monte Carlo Fabia has Trinity 17" Alloys (vRS has Gigaro)  The Standard tyres are 205 /40 R 17 XL

Some fit 215/40 R 17 tyres as the Polo, Ibiza & A1 Twinchargers got, or 205/45 R 17,  or just get 16

" rims, or as in a thread down the page might go to 15" rims.

@Murdockman

Which 1.2 TSI or 1.6 TDI 105 ps have anything in the performance and handling, the Suspension is called 'Sport' because maybe 15mm lower and they have rear drum brakes.

There are Elegance and other models with the same power and 15" rims.

As said before a mk2 monte will have 17s. 205/40 is standard size but if you keep those I'd highly recommend putting 215/40 or 205/45 tyres on, extra sidewall makes a massive difference.

They're still pretty harsh though.

You can go as small as a 15 inch wheel, the 1.2 htp ones and lower spec tsi ones can go with 14 inch wheels due to the smaller brakes.

Be worth dropping down a size for the sake of comfort.

I run 16 inch wheels in mine over winter with 195/50 tyres, noticeably softens the ride.

On those tyres they have basically the same size as the 17 inch wheels so the speedometer reading is not effected.

Thanks everyone for input.

Yes.. turns out they're 205 / 40 / 17

So if I understand... I have to keep the tyres or change the rims 🤔

And if I change rims it could affect the insurance.

I'll see how I go. I'm glad i don't live in Edinburgh... There's a pothole every 2 foot!

Lovely pic dieselmonte.

Those are not Monte Carlo Trinity alloys, looks like Black Gigaro, but some Monte Carlo did get them fitted.

(I sold a few sets of Black Gigaro in Scotland, or Dark Chrome that i painted black and left the silver / alloy rim showing / unpainted.)

When you need new tyres you could go to 215/40 R 17 or 205/45 R 17 on those rims.

You could change the rims for 16" or 15" and inform your insurance and quite probably pay nothing extra.

As many do for winter wheels/ tyres, and the insurance in the UK do not have dates that cover winter, and you are in Scotland.

Maybe you have an insurance broker that asks for £25 when you change things on a schedule / policy, but that is the greedy ones, or the muppets on the phone.

You are not doing anything different fitting 16" rims to a Mont Carlo because that is factory standard size from Skoda in other world regions.

That includes in Europe / EU. and the sizes for fitting Snow Chains as Skoda show in their bumf applies in the UK as much as in the rest of Europe / EU.

PS

I see new discs are fitted.

?

Is there a spare 15" wheel / tyre in the boot and the tools, locking wheel nut socket, tweazers for nut covers etc.

I spy some toledo tyres

I'd be getting them off ASAP.

Video very much related. And I was going 10 under the limit, 40 in a 50

As toot says those are gigaros, fabia vrs wheels. Didn't know some montes had them fitted. Presumed all uk ones got Trinity's like these.

Didnt know that about irish spec ones.

I've seen a white one like mine at work, original irish one now with Trinity's.

Mines a UK one.

Very strange

The 16s would have been far better suited for our roads although in fairness I've yet to bend or damage one of my rims on our potholes. Popped a tyre once but the wheel was absolutely fine.

Some VRS got bricks fitted so some Monte's could have Gigaros.

That happened as well so that any car could get the stolen wheels.

Others just came off the transporter with what was fitted on the production like.

And nothing of value was lost :D

So get rid of the tyres at some point anyway... I assumed they would've put cheap ones on anyway.

Is it a bad idea to get rims from a breakers?

Is the car still driveable with a damaged rim.

(I know it sounds like I'm worrying about something that might never happen but just wanna be prepared 🙄 and decide whether to just stick with them for now)

Cheers

Rims / tyres get advertised on this forum and sometimes from members in Scotland.  There is a for sale section.

Plenty sellers of wheels including breakers and you might have more come back buying from a business compared to a private seller.

No a car is not driveable with a damage rim if it is more than cosmetic damage like scrapes or scratches.

Set your tyre pressures, reset the TPMS and see how the car drives, see how it steers and grips and brakes.

With some insurers and brokers yes but possibly not with others, note the post from Adrian Flux.

If you get your insurance through one of the comparison sites that's usually fine for ordinary cars or vanilla models but often specialist insurers or brokers can offer more suitable policies for vehicles that are not ordinary or vanilla models and sometimes the premiums can work out lower (or much lower).

For 3 decades I had "classics" (over-priced, over-priced old cars) and low volume manufacture sportscars and the specialist insurance providers provided very wide range cover at very reasonable premiums and most of these cars were also daily use cars and for work, no garage or mileage limits, fully comp, UK & Europe breakdown cover included in many policies.  My last "classic" was modified some insurers didn't like that but the one I was with just wanted the modifications listed, premiums remained the same.

Look around someone wants your business at a reasonable premium -unless you have high risk factors.

Not me jealous.

UK has a much easier time getting insurance than us in Ireland.

Almost every insurer won't quote a car over 20 year old, some even as low as 14 year old.

The justy is a pita to get insurance for as classic insurance won't cover anyone under 25.

And won't cover any subaru.

In their eyes my 50hp justy is as dangerous as an sti.

Farce
