My new to me, MK3 has a few groans and squeaks

Featured Replies

Yesterday I got my hands on my replacement car and during the long 145 mile drive home I noticed a few creaks, groans and squeaks that appear to be coming from the central console unit. Now this might well be pretty much common for this model 2016, but as it's a L&K its beginning to annoy a little bit, especially as my other Superbs (4 so far) this being my 5th, and none of the others had any rattles, squeaks, groans or creaks, but they were also brand new cars and replaced at 3 years each. That being said, my last L&K Mk2 was 9 and a half years old without any such noises, so I was wondering if this is normal for a MK3 or not?

Another thing is that this 110HP diesel seems to be so much more noisy than the old 170HP in the MK2, is that the case that new ones are noisier or is by product of the weight saving maybe, i.e., the sound deadening is a little less efficient than the older ones? 🤔

Mine's a similar age to yours, but I don't have problems with creaks, groans and squeaks.

Maybe someone's removed the centre console in the past for whatever reason and they haven't put it back correctly?

Any idea how it comes off at all?

My 6 yr old MY17 has no squeaks creaks or groan around the dash, or anywhere else.

Although recently, the rear parcel shelf is starting to creak when taking bumpy corners.

Sorry, no idea at all.

I'm not very technical at all these days as I'm getting old and creaking at the joints, but it was just an idea of why yours is creaking.

I pulled the bottom section of the actual armrest off last night and the creaking stopped, so it is something rubbing either between the top and bottom of the rest against each other, or the bottom part of the of the rest and the sides of the storage cubby beneath it. I might packing it out with some foam draught excluder , perhaps starting with the parts that are touching the cubby sides.

Our armrest creaks…A LOT!
I’ve also separated the top from the bottom and packed it as well as I could but it made little difference. The bottom of the armrest doesn’t touch the topsides of the cubby hole; there should be a couple of small, black round bump stops on the front top edge of the cubby, which holds the bottom of the arm rest clear, which I think are specifically there to allow the cooled air to exit.

There also a slight buzzing sound - rather like a quiet bumble bee - at 50-70mph from the B pillar, exactly at ear level; no idea what that is.

The small bump stops are present on mine, and if I pry the plastic bottom off the actual armrest, the creaking from it seems to stop if I pull it up 1 notch. I'm thinking about packing some thin foam or similar in between them to see if that stops it. I have also noticed that if I rest my knee against the door card, that the door also creaks a bit then, it is so annoying when previous 4 cars never did that.

I’d be interested to hear if that works, Graham.
The most “solid” of the three I’ve had was the MKI, it was just weak in so many other areas! But it was very reliable til the oil pump went and the car filled with water, but of which I had rectified at big expense. And its still going strong in the hands of a Briskodian in Liverpool. I loved the sound of the the doors when they closed, with a hefty deep thud! But the 280 is very well screwed together, the gaps tighter and it’s the quietest by far.

Well, I'm going to give it a go if I can locate some foam in my local craft shop, and I'll let you know if it cures it. I'm not going to be touching the door cards at the moment, I'll wait until the 3 months warranty has expired before touching those, just in case anything should break while I'm in there.

Interestingly, I thought I'd have a check to see if the other 4 Superb's I've had are still on the road, the first one, in 2004, light blue was replaced in 2007, appears to have been scrapped in 2008 🙄. The second one in 2007, in cappuccino, replaced in 2010, also seems to have met its maker in 2011 🙄. The third one in 2010 was in amethyst purple, replaced again in 2013, is also.. no it's still on the road somewhere.

And the fourth one arrived in 2013, petrol blue, I purchased that 2016 when I retired and ran it until it got written off for me 🙄 2 months ago. So this Mk3 is now my 5th Superb, so I guess you could say that I love them.

I have my centre console, top speaker cover in the dash, info screen, Virtual dash, glovebox and both front doors padded for rattles and noises. Every now and then it still finds a way to rattle somewhere.
it’s been like that from it was only a few months old, when I got it.

Well, that’s sh1te!

I have a 2020 MkIII hatchback with panoramic sunroof. On driving it back from the dealers it was the normal limo like drive on the motorway but as soon as I got it on A, B or unclassified roads there were so many creaks it was like I was sailing in a wooden sail ship.

I isolated them to the headlining but in the meantime the sun blind failed. The dealer packed it with foam saying they had had another Superb with a similar problem. Shortly afterwards I had panoramic sunroof surround crack, what appears to be a common fault. The long and short of this is that Skoda have accepted responsibility to replace the panoramic sunroof surround, sun roof and the blind. Currently only the sunroof surround and blind changed as glass sunroof is on back order. The good news is that the creaks have pretty much all been eliminated.

I had a MkII Superb estate and it was bliss to drive - solid and noise free. Cannot fault the build quality of mine bar the bumper clip on the R/O/S.

Hope you get all your noises sorted as I feel your pain but once done you’ll no doubt be driving around with a massive smile again.

Hi mate,

Was the dealer kind enough to show you where they put the foam or what they used for this? Have the same issue with my roof liner and the dealers in AUS are useless.

@Graham Butcher my MK3 has been squeaky since I've owned it, though most were fixed under warranty. Still have issues with the roof liner and a few other bits.

That’s the ones in the front. Also padded the boot cover, O/S quarter panel, rear seats and boot trim.
To be honest, I have always blamed the terrible Monroe shocks for causing most of it. It’s quiet at the minute and hasn’t vibrated any new noises since the bilsteins went in.
Time will tell if my theory is correct.

Has anyone tried a silicone spray on the areas where plastics or leather seem to be creaking/groaning as it seems to me at least that the noises appear when cornering and a leg or something exerts a pressure on the trim parts, i.e., the armrest etc. I have already pulled the bottom off the centre armrest and made if you will, a gasket out of a thin foam sheet purchased from Hobbycraft and while it has reduced the noise coming from the armrest, it's completely gone.

Will the silicone react in anyway with leather / plastic, I don't think so but does everyone think?

Today, we cleaned the leather seats with some leather cleaner and conditioner and paid particular attention to the area of the front seats that abut the central console and also cleaned the plastics at the front of the console where it meets with the dashboard plastics and it has most certainly eliminated many of the squeaks and groans making it somewhat of a quieter ride now and you can even use the central armrest without it constantly squeaking away.

I pulled the trigger on a can of Autoglym Silicone spray from Amazon today, it says that works with leather, rubber and plastics etc to eradicate squeak, so when that arrives later this week I'll spray it all the joints and wipe off the excess and also give the door rubbers/seals a wipe over with it and maybe if I can crack the door cards open enough, a quick spray behind them to try and stop them from squeaking if someone uses the door armrest. I'll update everyone when this has been done.

Yay, the silicone spray has arrived, and I've already been spraying, the centre consol now sounds quiet but the centre armrest, although quieter with that foam "gasket" inserted, still squeaks between the honeycomb section and the leather trimmed section, which I'm currently struggling to separate in order to treat it. The door cards squeak (both front doors), I have tracked down to the switch plates for the windows. Popped those out with some trim removal tools, cleaned around the edges and then sprayed the area and the plate edges with silicone, popped them back in position, and they are now as quiet as the proverbial church mouse, so now if only I can separate the centre armrest I might be able to have all quiet inside the car.

I have a rattle from rear right window switch / handle area as well as rear right where the seat back gets locked. It's right where your ear would be sitting at the back very annoying. Any solutions ?

Is it a rattle or creaking? I'm not aware of anything that could rattle in that area?

I assume your seats fold down?

tap the striker down with a hammer to tighten the fit when the latch clicks over it.
