TBH, service costs are already not that dissimilar to ICE vehicles and you can absolutely guarantee they’ll increase. Obviously there are far less wet consumables with an electric vehicle, but items such as brakes pads/discs, suspension parts costs (which will have higher wear rates due to the weight of batteries) will be ramped-up. I’m sure they’ll also start bringing in more expensive service items, such as (pointless) battery “conditioning”, which will be mandatory to protect revenue.

I want to completely agree, but presumably regenerative braking will reduce brake pad wear?

Suspension, tyres, and EV shenanigans such as "Oooh! See this graph here? That tells you that this hot summer has cooked your battery, Love. I'm afraid it's going to need to be refurbished with our battery conditioning service, or else your range will drop to next to nothing, and you'll need a new battery because your car will be worthless with a dead battery, won't it?. We're very busy just now as this heat has damaged a lot of EV batteries, but I'll see if I can squeeze you in next week."

Aero wheels seem all the rage these days, led by the electric revolution.

There's already several models from Skoda available.

I'm sure they'll be other options ;) although I agree the Passat isn't the most attractive especially sporting the Rline badge.

Hub-caps!? Nah, they're 'aerodynamically optimised plastic covers'. :D

not that many dealers ever seem to have stock that you can drive away within hours

Hasn't arrived here yet thankfully.

I was at a Skoda garage on Wednesday & they had about 10 enyaks parked on the grass outside.

I considered the Enyak before my Superb.

It's the most "normal" EV car I've seen with a decent space in the back.

The fact that there were so many of them hanging around put me off as the resale value should be pretty low.

On one side yes, but don't forget EV cars are quite a bit heavier than ICE which will add extra load.

It also depends how heavy footed you are with braking. With anticipation & careful driving you can barely use the mechanical brake but stab at the pedal and you are using both especially in a hybrid.

It depends which way manufacturers go especially with regards to the EV competition.

Tesla for example have no fixed service intervals & use predictive diagnosis to tell you when a service is needed.

Jag have a year inspection for their EVs.

As long as competition remains high from the new EV starters, hopefully costs will stay attractive to encourage people to make the jump.

However once EV is established, I'm sure all manufacturers will start looking to regular revenue like shorter service intervals or annual subscriptions.

This at least is one advantage of the new Chinese assault on the EU market.

I can't believe the design meeting decided to make the new Superb bigger! Not exactly tiny to start with😂

Premiere of Skoda Superb Mk4 will be broadcast live on 2 November at 19:00 CET on You Tube.

Everyone is pushing the SuV route, but I can't understand why anyone would prefer a big SuV over a nice estate car.

These big SUVs are smaller inside cabin and boot space, it is indeed odd why folk are buying them.

I think SUVs becoming more common because no one can really make a decent range normal looking electric cars, all bloody gurt things

Errr…

Superb Mk4 estate boot: 690l

Kodiaq Mk2 boot: 950l…

If I remember the figures correctly…

I think speed bumps are one of the causes of the surge in SUV sales.

SUVs can happily bowl over quite nasty speed bumps.

We have some very nasty ones on one of my commute routes, and I see SUVs blatting over them without a care in the world.

I've been trying to work out what the next car trend will be, and I'm guessing it's futuristic-looking EVs.

I never understood the SUV craze, or the MPV craze either.

I'll take a hatchback that will fit me and my family and our luggage.

If it needs to be an estate, so be it.

My rules are that it has to be able to fit a washing machine (in box) in the boot, has enough oomph for overtaking safely, has a big engine, and is acceptably economical to run.

There's not many electric cars today available with an estate/combi type rear unless you buy a larger SuV.

MachE, EV6, IonicX, Tesla are all only available as hatchback "style".

I have high hopes for the VW ID7 which looks like it could be a Passat electric estate...

Would bode well for a Superb mk5 all electric in 5 years time when I'm ready to change.

There is a simple reason for Enyaq & other VW Group BEV,s sitting waiting for owners and to be first registered in the UK, and Mild Hybtrids and PHEV,s .

Average fleet Co2 in the UK and getting the lower or nil emission vehicles firt registered so that higher emission ones can get sold and first registered without VW UK being fined on every vehicle.

Next year a higher percentage of EV,s will need to be registered and VW Group require their Partners in China to get more MG,s registered to save them because VW Group are not producing and importing enough EV,s and not smaller / less expensive ones.

*MG sell a proper EV Estate car.*    VW, SEAT, Skoda & Audi could have very easily long before now.

I have a friend in the industry & he doesn't think Estate cars will come back anytime soon. "Nobody buys them", hence why many companies dont offer them anymore.

It's why I'm clinging onto the superb and Octavia as long as I can.

@GabboHas he made it to CEO of any car manufacturer yet?

That will be why Skoda will be doing an Octavia Estate sized one then, someone has to provide for the limited market what there are people wanting.

The MG estates sell / lease well.

Plenty need small light commercial EV,s and Estate cars can do that job perfectly well then there is the usual Superb estate customers,  Airport Transport that need catered for.

It’s not that big at 950l but I used the wrong wording when I meant big, I mean like the karoq kamiq xc40 etc, they’re big and bulky but don’t offer more space than say a Octavia or superb

  • Author

I think the current kodiaq is a bit less at 840L or 735L if you have the PHEV version.

The new version has a 910L but is also a beast of car.

Practicality is where Skoda really delivers.

The Enyaq was the only EV I looked at with a decent sized boot for the price.

It felt like double the size of the more expensive Ionic5/6/ev6/teslas.

We've just given back our other car (Mercedes GLE) & the boot was tiny but the car was huge (2200kgs)

You could barely fit 3 suitcases due to the high floor where the battery was stored.

A family holiday was difficult with it compared with the Octavia.

One can’t compare a Kamiq and a Superb…

What do you expect from a longitudinal mount drivetrain, especially one with a hybrid battery in the boot...

VW have obviously been listening

New Passat is estate only

There is apparently a new ID7 tourer estate coming

The largest of the SUV cars you mention is the Karoq. A Karoq is 4380mm in length and 1841mm wide.

The smallest of the hatchbacks you mention is the Octavia at 4690mm - that's 300mm longer than the largest SUV.   And it's 1994mm wide making it 150mm wider.

Our garage could take the Karoq, but the Octavia was too long.  The Octavia hatch boot capacity is 590L - the Karoq could be 588l with rear seats in place that's a mere 2L less.

With seats folded, the Octavia hatch gives 1580L of volume,  The karoq gives 1630 L with them down ( 50L more ) or 1810L with them out ( 230L more ).

And whilst we could just walk in to the karoq, we have to bend down to access the Octavia.

What was that you were saying about the Karoq being big and bulky and not offering more space? :D  The exact opposite is true.

I get why people would prefer to chose one car over the other, but I also get why the old fashioned repmobile has died.  As long as an SUV is for sale, I'd never go back to a saloon / estate as an SUV is easier to live with.

The Superb hatch is 4862mm long  - that's nearly half a meter longer than a karoq.  And they've made the new one even longer 😲

I'm scratching my head on what Skoda are thinking here. I get the Octavia and I get the Superb but I don't get building both.  I reckon the new Superb is going to be rarer than hens teeth on UK roads.

why that critical :)

ŠS hatchs look better, quieter, have cleaner rear window and have enough space,

4pcs 225/55r17 without dropping rear seats

@kodiaqsportline I agree that SUVs have advantages for access and egress. The middle back seat also normally have a smaller hump or none at all.

Higher driving position is attractive to a lot of people.

That said, I still prefer a normal hatch/estate as the above are not so important to me.

I did feel like king of the road when I had a Ford transit for a week as a rental. Very high driving position, one of the highest around. Until I try to park at height restricted place and I sweat lol

I prefer an hatch/estate to an suv for the length from tailgate door to bottom of back seat. I want my space on the floor not in the air.

i Cannot find an suv that gives almost 4ft with the back seats up like the Mondeo does (1175mm)
