Hard ride - possible shock absorber issue

Featured Replies

The ride in my Skoda 2 elegance hatch back is really hard and even small road imperfections get transmitted to the cabin.  Any ideas anybody?

What size tyres?

Does it have DCC?

My tyre size is 225 40 18. No, it doesn't have DCC

Many Superb MK2 owners have changed their hard riding, low profile, 225/40R18 tyres to 205/55R16.

The ride is transformed. Much softer riding and far more comfortable.

205/55R16 are also far less likely to be damaged by potholes than 225/40R18.

You could use the standard Superb MK2 7Jx16 ET45 rims or the 6Jx16 ET50 Superb MK2 winter rims. The narrower 6Jx16 ET50 winter rims are approved by Skoda for use with snow chains.

Another option to 205/55R16 is slightly oversize 215/55R16 fitted to the standard 7Jx16 ET45 rims. As you are used to the wider 225 tyres, 205 might look a little small on the big Superb MK2.

Definitive wheel and tyre guide for the Superb 2:

Thanks so much for the input here.  I think my best option is to go down the 16" route.  This, by the way, was deemed not a workable option by my local main dealer!!  I'll have a look and se what's available in wheels and then make a selection for tyres.

Go looking in scrapyards, there's going to be plenty of dead Superbs in them by now.

That may depend on your front brake disc size.

What is the VIN?

Unless it's a V6 they should be fine, but worth double checking.

I know you can fit 16" VAG alloys over 312mm discs, but thought some Superbs had 320mm or larger discs.

The V6 got 345 mm disks and require minimum of 17" wheel. Everything else is 312 mm or less and works with 16" wheels.

I thought as much. The OP hasn't actually stated which engine they have?

Hi

two years back I got my 2012 superb and found the ride hard.

chose vw Eos 17 inch alloys with 235 45 17 goodyear tyres

drove quieter and smoother, more comfortable.

you might get some money for your original alloys to offset the cost

I've recently bought a 2012 superb estate and noticed the ride wasn't as compliant as I was hoping for.

found out the two rear springs were broken, both in the same place, as a result I had less travel on the springs, replaced them and it's so much different now, far more comfortable and smooth

Thanks once again for your very helpful input. The Goodyear 235 45 17's on Eos 17's is an interesting option but the increased tyre width over the generous current 225's may not be my preferred option. Also the Eos 17 inch alloys in good nick appear somewhat rare on an initial search. Thanks to you Jayw13702 for your input re the broken springs on the rear.  The car is going in for a service shortly so I'll ask them to check this out. The car is regularly serviced by a trusted local independent garage and I would think they would have noticed if this were the case.
