Leaking front shock absorbers

Featured Replies

Both Morecambe Skoda and Grimsby Skoda have said there shock absorbers and perfectly fine/normal, but other non Skoda garages both say they are leaking and need replacing, probably Skoda trying to not repair on the 1year warranty I have? I've had the car 6months and this leaks have been there for 3 months. Any ideas? Regards

They are shot, your observations re Skoda are correct, VAG even created a BS document speaking of "misting" from vaporised damping fluid conveniently being blind to the boiling point being around 300°C.

Try trading it in towards a newer model and see how their tune changes!

The one photo'd is an MOT failure and by extension the vehicle is not safe to be driven, I never make these kind of alarmist projections (wrong word) but in your case you need some leverage against the crooks, I would give them one more opportunity to reconsider their position before you pay to have the urgent repairs done and obtain a judgement against them in the small claims court.

Heck the BS document even has photos to show what they claim is misting and what is a leak, the latter is far less than yours so by their own admission they are trying it on.

Hopefully someone will link to the document.

Is the photo of the LH suspension strut taken from the front?

This is What Grimsby Skoda Say it's completely Normal to leak oil, Morecambe Skoda say the same..Screenshot_20230807_122931_Outlook.thumb.jpg.14eb8f038730670414fb431920a16d9d.jpg

Not that it helps, but I have a 2018 too and one shock had failed, the other one leaking like yours. My local independent flagged it when they were investigating other issues. They were also quite damning about Skoda identifying and fixing these issues. As others have said, it's an MOT failure in both cases. Sorry.

Weeping is normal but leaking to that extent is not, both Skoda dealers don't seem to understand the difference :wall:

Muppets, they are dumb enough to put their stupidity in writing!

All the better for you though, ask an MOT tester and if he says its a fail pay him to test it to certify that, ask him to really scrutinise the vehicle closely because he might identify other stuff that you can force them to pay for, you might as well add them to the court claim.

I think I would pay an independant to do the work and not trust those jokers to do anything other than tell lies, they may even believe the K-rap they are being told to trot out but it doesn't change the facts.

How many miles were on the car when you bought it and what mileage is it on now? When is the MOT due?

I would not be surprised if that failed an MOT. I would get a second opinion from an independent MOT station (preferably one that doesn't do repairs) and ask them their opinion.

Car is not necessarily unsafe to drive. I've driven cars with worse shocks than that (though I did get them replaced ASAP once I was aware).

I agree with your last sentence, what I wrote above was diametrically opposite to how I am but if you are dealing with recalcitrant muppets who are not honouring their obligations then you have to swing to the other side, MOT fail = unsafe to drive on road = fix it you *****rds or I'll get it done and the court will make you pay.

I check my vehicle very often, the Yeti struts are visible through the wheelarch, I have had the suspension apart to replace drop links etc, never any misting or leaking, then during one of my mammoth towing journeys last year I realised the overladen trailer was making the car porpoise and the oscillations did not seem to be damped, the suspension is so stiff and with a short wheelbase its hard to do a bounce test, the bonnet and wings are not strong enough to push on without denting them, I did it on the slam panel and was shocked to find I had zero damping on the front end,  it really was not apparent on normal driving.

Both had leaked out a lot of oil and had done so in a very short time period at probably 105K miles.

I have a 17 plate Octy, First MOT in 2020 there was an advisory .NSF  shock absorber slight misting of oil .Second MOT, no mention .Third MOT this year & it has returned .

From the photo I would call that a leak not slight misting .

seems like the dealer is trying to get out of paying for work covered by warranty.

Bought the Car at 25k mileage with a clean MOT, they didn't expect me to Re MOT it the next day and straight away it came back Advisories Misting front shocks, So obvious Skoda Grimsby ignored the Advisories to sell the car with a clean MOT.. at 32k milage I went for 4 new tyres independent garage that's when they said the front shocks are leaking amd need replacing, that photo is LH side, driver side not as bad but leaking.. Grimsby Skoda are Very bad, Never use this dealership

Thank you for the additional info.

Well done on re MOT ing the car the day after you bought it 😁. It just confirms my & others suspicions that  the dealer is out to pull your pants down.

Are Morecambe & Grimsby dealers 1 and the same ??.

I can only suggest you take the car to a truly independent tester and get a written report on the result of MOT test. From the photo's I would say that's a fail.

Near me there is A MOT testing station run by DVSO/VOSA or whatever it is called today , They don't just test Lgv's and Pcv's  but also cars .

Truly independent as they do no repairs whatsoever .

Mine was misting and wet at the top

and the mot station listed it as an advisory

On my 11/2016 Octy after 147k km all original shocks still are dry.

Looks ok, taking in mind "nice" Latvian roads.

Wow that's very low mileage to have knackered shocks. The front shocks on my car have done nearly 10x that mileage. Maybe the previous owner(s) lived in an area with a lot of speed bumps and didn't have much mechanical sympathy.

Did you make them aware they were leaking at the 3 month point and did you ask for them to be replaced? Did you also make them aware that your MOT flagged them as advisories?

Agreed, I would be pushing hard for the dealer to replace them or contribute at least 50% of the cost.

I've had a mk5 golf up to 9 years 65k, a vrs mk2 facelift to 10 yeara 75k, currently a mk7 75k 6.5 years old. All had original dampers.  None showed any misting at all and that looks like what I'd call a leak for sure!!
