Petrol engine but sounding like a diesel?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I am so sorry for bothering you for such a worry but I have no one to turn to ask such a question since I am new to the cars and don't have a father figure or friend circle around to consult.

I recently bought my first car and was wondering if the engine noise is normal. This is a petrol Skoda Octavia but the engine sounds a bit noisy IMO.

What do you think? Shall I worry about it and take it to the service? If this is your advice then what should I tell them to look into?

Thanks a lot in advance your help is approcated a lot!

Welcome.    I see it is a 2018 car but I had to look at your profile to see that as on a phone that is the only way.    How many miles has the car done? What engine has it, a 1.0, 1 5 or 2.0 TSI?     When was it serviced last and were the spark plugs replaced?    Was it bought from a private individual or a trader / dealer?    Just now I can not see or hear videos but later will try to.     I will flag your post for a mod to move it to the Octavia section .

Be better to have a video of the engine itself with the bonnet open and the engine running

From the OP's first post on Briskoda the car is a Skoda Octavia 1.5 TSI ACT SE DSG Euro 6.

Hi @toot,

Thanks for your reply. This is a 2018 Octavia 1,5 SE TSI and the mileage is19260. I bought it from a dealer (company) and they own a garage. Unfurtunately I don't have the service history as I was told that they are digital and can be seen after going to the service which I couldn't have found any time yet to do so.

@PetrolDave I will do that when the rain stops, thanks :)

@DGWThanks a lot for checking and informing before me, appriciated a lot! 🙏

The car does not need to go for a Service to get the Service and Warranty history from Skoda.  Ask a main dealership or Skoda Customer Services what is on the cars Service and Warranty history also if it required the Recall / Service campaign software update that some 1.5 TSI ACT got as part of a Full RECALL action.

Thanks @toot,

I got in touch with the Skoda customer service and the last record that they have was on 05/06/2019 when the mileage was 13638... It now has 19255 mileage but I only did 55 miles.

I know that it might not be the my best buy so far but I really like the car and would like to use it for many years.

@PetrolDave here is the video as you suggested but had to upload it somewhere as it wasn't possible to upload it here due to the max size restrictions.

There are no lights in my dasboard but as I know that there might be multiple reasons for this noisy state of the engine, what would be your suggestions for me to do?

Shall I take it to the service asap? If yes then what should I tell them?

Thanks...

It's hard on videos, sound recordings et al. especially if you don't own the same model engine for comparison. It does sound a bit rattly especially over on the left side facing front bonnet, it that where the timing chain or belt is? (Think I can see the timing cover there).

What's the 29/5/23 date written on the engine cover?

Why would it only have travelled 4k (edit 5k) miles in last 4 years? 14k first year by comparison?

Thanks @TheClientfor your reply,

I bought the car 6 weeks ago without any experience and knowledge of cars from a dealer without seeing it (I know that it sounds stupid and crazy but I didn't have any other options) therefore I don't have any answers to your questions. I can try to ask them to the dealer but I am not sure if I can get any answers for them since they think that the sale is alreay closed for them. HPI came out clear and the car had 3 keys (no body knows why) and I was just so tired of looking around and just purchased it.

Do you think that something is fishy or sounding not right? 😕

It is a belt on a 1.5tsi ACT which until just 6 weeks ago Skoda UK Skoda dealers were saying was due replacement  at 5 years.   Was the car possibly on lease from Motability?  Was the first MOT done 2-1 month before the car was 3 years old?  That can be a clue.

It's all about building a picture and being comfortable with answers. Yes, I agree they'll be less interested in answering questions on why so low miles, why 3 keys but if there is are possible faults they're on the hook for statutory warranty under consumer rights. First 30 days, if there is a fault you had right to return. First 6 months, faults assumed there at purchase.

The date could be an oil change date. What does the oil look like on the dip stick? Edit 4 years is a long time without an oil change.. what is recorded on the .gov mot history for the car? Must be at least 2 mots shown and mileage at dates?

If ghe noise is worrying you and doesn't seem right, now is the time to take to either a skoda or vw skoda focused independent and ask to check and report back. Preferably with something in writing the result of investigation. They should put that on the invoice/ report routinely anyway.

Do not leave it 6 months, then get it checked and find out you've got a significant issue. It will be much harder to deal with in your favour.

I would want to find out if the cam belt had been done at 5 years and done wrongly.   This might be the issue arising because of some of  those that have been doing 1.5 TSI ACT,s  and that really should not of and not just because they were doing them £300 or less the main dealer prices.  There are main dealers that have got 1.0 TSI,s and 1?5 TSI ACT,s running crap.

The MOT history is as the following;

  • 28/05/2021 - 15859 miles - Pass
  • 17/06/2022 - 17413 miles - Pass
  • 12/06/2023 - 18738 miles - Pass

As it seems like the previous owner wasn't also using it too much (like me).

I just talked to the dealership and they told me that they don't know why the date is overthere as the one of the mechanics could have written it while making some checks.

What would be your suggestions for me to do?

I am going a long business trip and be back in October. It would make sense for me to take the car to a Skoda service for a full inspection/service when I am back as it will be in the 6 monthstimeframe 😓

Correction

I would at least get the noise inspected and as per @toot ask if there is evidence the timing belt has been renewed, is there any phase diagnostics check  that can be checked.

There are diagnostics for some engines but they tend to vary engine generation by engine generation.

I wouldn't say you have to get a full inspection done unless you are doubting other aspects as well but an initial check of the operational noise before 6 months would be wise.

See if any others with the 1.5act reply back on here as to what they hear relative to their motor noise as well... I

Edit. Ps what does the oil on dip stick actually look like?

@TheClient This is the engine oil level (sorry for the quality of the pictures).

I am just trying to book a service in the main dealership and there are different options for me to select. Which ones that you suggest for me to choose? (never been to a service/garage before 😓)

Booking for "Initial Diagnostic Fee - First 30 mins diagnosis" option would be enough for them to direct me for the right solutions?

Thanks,

Is that the oil dipped cold with engine not started,  or as the oil should then be checked.  At normal operating temperature.  So up above an indicated 80*oC and car stopped and on the flat and after a few minutes?    Are there any invoices showing the oil used.  That should have been to VW 508 00 / 509 00.  0w 20 FS IV.   They might have used VW 504 00 / 507 00,  5w 30 or 0w 30 FS III.

Thanks @toot!

I cannot thank enough for all of you for the anwers.

I don't have any invoice for the oil to know what it was used.

The car was stopped an hour ago and almost (not entirely) flat.

So,  all of the suggestions are pointing out two likely issues;

1- it is time to change the oil as a wrong one might have been used.
2- It is time to change the cambelt.

Is it wise to book initially for an oil change and inspection service?

There are three different category for this though;

  • Oil and Inspection Service (Oil and Inspection Service - Oil and filter change with vehicle inspection.)
  • Oil and Inspection Service with Pollen Filter (Oil and Inspection Service with Pollen Filter - Oil and filter change, vehicle inspection and Pollen Filter change. Recommended every year or 10,000 miles.)
  • Oil and Inspection Service with Extended Scope (Full inspection Service with Oil Change - Oil and filter change with extended vehicle inspection. Recommended every 2 years or 20,000 miles.)

Shall just book for one of these options then see where it takes me?

Regards,

For the benefit of those who are not technical:

The mention of phase above is due to the cambelt being the part that times the engine. If phase is out, the camshaft timing will be off and the engine run rough, hard to start, not run at all, etc.

From what I can see, that oil looks very clean, I'd say it has been changed for preparing for sale with few miles on it.  As to what they used or what spec say 507.0 or 508.00 it is, I can't tell that from the photos!!  😉

I've said / suggested what I'd do but it is up to you if you want to book it in for services and cambelt change and other services without actually knowing or investigating anything first...

Not time to change the cam belt.  Skoda / VW UK have dropped the advice they appear to have never given their reason for giving for decades, well it was 4 years then changed to 5.

Time to find out if it has been changed by someone without the gear and not much of an idea.

If it helps, my 1.4 tsi sounds similar to your video. They are a bit tappy with the bonnet up, can’t hear it in the car though.

Thanks a lot everyone for your kind help!

It has been appriciated a lot...

You may not realise this (as it hasn't been told enough) but for you to be here and reply messages of some strangers might make their day and help them out a lot which they would never get otherwise.

I would like to thank each and everyone of you from the buttom of my heart for being here and replying to us as some of us are very unfortunate not to get to learn any of these car knowledge from our families, friends etc. Trying to watch some videos on Youtube to learn some life skills are too tiring.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
