Hey all,

 

Is VW 507 00 the only spec permissible for this engine? This seems to be the only one in the service manual.

 

A local garage has changed my oil and stated they filled it with Castrol "C3" non long life oil. After googling round, I cannot find any Castrol oil that seems to meet VW 507 00 except for the "Long life" Castrol EDGE... which now makes me wonder if they've used the wrong oil, and if I run it for the normal year before the next service, I'm going to end up with DPF trouble down the line.

C3 is completely wrong for this car and needs to come out immediately.

 

Using the wrong oil causes higher ash production and the DPF to block up much quicker.

 

Youre correct that the only suitable castrol oil is edge LL.

1. It's not completely wrong since any ACEA C3 oil is especially mentioned for cars with DPF due to low sulfated ash content.

On other hand, should look how it's suitable for exact engine (PumpeDuese, CommonRail, LongLife, etc.) because reduced amount of sulfated ash in oil is not one and only important parameter.

 

2. It's not only suitable Castrol 507.00 oil. Castrol EDGE Professional Long Life III also have official 507.00 approval

(at least, old Technical Data Sheets says so; don't know current situation)

+ there's also Castrol GTX 5W-30 C3 but without official 507.00 approval ("CAN be used when car asks for 507.00 oil").

 

3. Anyway, if you want keep engine clean for long time, avoid LongLife (30k km) oil changes and stick for 10...15k km interval.
C'mon, 5L bottle + filter + replacement costs (virtually) nothing.
And no need to stick especially for expensive brands; any officially approved 504.00/507.00 oil (0W30 or 5W30) will be ok if you want count each dollar.

^^^ OK if you maybe only do 10,000 miles a year or so, but if you do 18,000-20,000 miles or more a year then the Variable / Flexible  Oil & Filter interval is perfectly OK.

These engines are not made of sugar. 

Location location location and how a vehicle is used counts for lots.

If drives fast, a lot, with !!! good fuel- then ok, agree. Anyway, will be pushed to add oil during LongLife interval.

15k changes is 10k miles?

 

Interestingly enough, I found that Euro Car Parts actually sell a Triple QX 5w/30 oil with 507 00 approval, not too expensive either!

The garage have come back to me and said they have installed Castrol Edge 0w/40 A3/B4.

 

Presumably i'm not wrong in thinking that is totally wrong, and should be changed? Sulphated ash content of 1.15% according to the datasheet.

Not on the list of Castrol oils approved to 507 00 , no.

This is totally wrong. Replace oil a.s.a.p.

It has been changed, and i've been given a full refund of the entire service. Interestingly enough the oil direct from a Skoda dealer was only £2 more expensive than Eurocarparts Triple QX, so went with the proper stuff to treat it after its mishap.
