Exhaust emissions control system light on.

Recommended Posts

My exhaust emissions control system light has just come on.

My car is business 2016 superb diesel.

I put in some Redex Diesel System cleaner the other day, not sure if this is related or not.

Just had a good drive on a motorway to see if the light would come off, bit it hasn’t.

No noticeable drop in power.

I guess I will have to take it to a dealer, in the mean time, is it safe to drive?

Thanks,

Tim.

Read your owners manual. I think historically at least, a red warning light, or a flashing yellow/amber one indicates a more serious problem than a solid yellow.

How far away is the dealer?

Until the reason for the light is known, it's hard to know what the risk is. May well be a member local to you with VCDS who could read the code for a beer token or two.

@Timcooper55Was there any reason you decided to use Redex if the car was going OK?

If it was cleaning the system the stuff getting cleaned had to get through the system.  Or not.

The same owners manual probably still says not to use Fuel Additives.

VW Group sell Fuel Additives, but still tell you not to use them.

The Diesel you buy already comes with detergents in.

There is no red engine management light.

Any light should be treated with urgency whatever colour it may be.
the only red lights are oil pressure and brake fluid warning.

But a yellow eml can be just as detrimental depending on what’s actually wrong

I didn't say there was a red engine management light.

Wrong side of bed?

No no, just didn’t want it to be misconstrued as an amber light isn’t something that should be glossed over :)

Many thanks for replies.

Managed to get it into a local garage.

It was a glow plug that needed replacing which they did.

Diagnostic test £62.50

labour £45.83

Glow plug £17.44.

VAT £25.15

Total £150.92

Not sure if this is is expensive for the job or not, however as I needed the car, and didn’t feel safe driving it with the amber light on, I was happy to pay this, especially as they did it the same day.

I'm getting the same exhaust control system light issue.

Did the glow plug error show up on the tester ?

I will take it to the local garage and see if it's the same case.

I left it at the garage so didn’t see what the tester said. The garage just rang me up and told me it was a glow plug.
