Key not working

Featured Replies

One of my two keys will no longer lock or unlock  boot and doors. Works fine in ignition.

Tried changing battery  but has no effect.

   Car is 2017 Fabia

Does the red led light up when you push any button?

Thanks. AG Falco

@chris666 It's not unheard of to find a supposedly new button cell to be dead. If, as AG suggests, the red led doesn't light up with button press, try another, known good cell.

My only VW Group remote cell battery brand is Panasonic as is what was fitted originally, always worked for me, some people like to buy large "cards" of button cell batteries for next to no money!

Agree, often find that bargain no brand button cells can be a waste of money. Duracell works for me - but have occasionally had relatively short life from some of them. A good idea to try and rotate use between keys too.

So it's a Key problem then.

Any key buttons worn or stuck down?

Do all the buttons click/feel like the spare key buttons do?

Thanks. AG Falco

No, the buttons aren't worn or stuck down. Both keys seem the same

It is possible that you will require a replacement key fob, it sounds as if your remote control function has failed. The immobiliser chip is separate from the remote control buttons and is passive (not battery powered). I believe it is possible, but a bit fiddly, to swap over the immobiliser chip into a new remote control fob.

That sounds like the most likely explanation. At least I can still use the key to get in using the lock in the door handle. Don't think I want the expense of a new fob

There are suppliers who can supply a replacement key at less than 1/2 the dealer price - some branches of Timpsons (other suppliers available) for instance.

Thanks for that. Maybe I'll give them a go

Further developments with the keys. I thought it would be a good idea to fit the keys with new Duracells to pre empt any problems in the future with dead  batteries. After replacing the batteries, I thought I would try the  keys to see if they would unlock the doors, which they wouldn't. However, after I'd put the key in the ignition and turned it , I took the key out and without thinking pressed one of the buttons on the key and it worked. Same thing with the spare key, wouldn't work to lock/unlock the doors, until the key had been turned in the ignition, it would not lock/unlock the doors.

Thought this might bevof interest to anyone in the future with a similar problem.

@chris666 thanks for reporting back

But are you sure you didn't just do a key (remote) synchronization as in the first part of AGFalco's post on 5th October, as detailed in the Owner's Manual?

If (the VW) "emergency" unlocking the driver's door using the key blade as soon as the driver's door is opened the alarm goes off.

No because I did try this a few days previously and it did not work

Thanks for reply.

Fair enough, with VW's over complicated computer programs who knows, not I, just that I'm confused as to how you got in the car if neither remote would unlock the door(s), unless the door(s) were already unlocked using the key blade sets the alarm off in my experiences of my wife's VWSkoda car ownership.

Not to worry, I'm glad you're sorted as my wife had to buy a new remote, £143 and £41.40 to 'code' it, both from VWSkoda Dealer.

I always suggest not thinking of the second remote as a spare but to use both keys alternatively in some respect as that way both remotes and batteries get regular use so wear more evenly and you know both work and where both remotes are, rather than one put somewhere forgotten about and possibly with a low battery anyway.

Also for others, my wife's had a non-working remote after a battery change because the battery wasn't fully located against the connecting peg (a GM Vauxhall car and Dealership changing the remote battery as part of the car's service), I'm not saying that was the issue this time as it happened with both remotes and I wasn't there as I was with the GM Vauxhall remote.

Again thanks for your feedback and info.
