Inspection in X days

New11

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a message in my Kodiaq "Inspection in X days". We have this car for over 4 years and not on warranty any more.

What do you recommend to do now ? I mean I will go for the inspection obviously but ... should I buy some sort of service before that ?

@New11  The Inspection is the basic annual service, and will initially be set to year or two. It counts down as warning for about last 30 days (as does last 1000 miles).

When was it last serviced, was it basic (minor) service, or extended (full or major) service.  In simple terms tend to alternate, although depends on your mileage as reaching time intervals and mileage points usually don't sync.

You do not need a service plan, can just pay as you go. Depending on your style of driving and mileage the service plans often don't work as nearly always one minor, and one major service in 2-3 years which might not be suitable.

Really need to advise how long ago it was serviced, what type of service (minor or full), mileage at last service and now, and age of car for people to give best advice.

The main dealers should do job properly and any safety recalls too, and will do extra work (at high price, if you let them).  But if car is out of warranty a local garage, or fast fit centre that does servicing will be cheaper

INSPECTION can show separate from Service or Oil change due if someone does not set or reset properly.

There is no just INSPECTION.     Ask a price of an INSPECTION, there is not one,

So have the car set on Fixed Servicing 9,400 miles /372 days or Variable 18,000-20,000 miles / 24 months.

Some places do still do Minor & Major servicing as was the norm till 2020 when Skoda UK went Oil & Inspection services & extended scope @ 3 years then each 2.

***Get an Inspection of the Body Work when the car is being serviced, that is for the Paint Warranty up to 3 years then for the Corrosion Warranty for 12 years.

No additional cost, it should not need asked for, it is their job.,  Just they dont bother & Skoda & VW UK know that, then say no record of being done.***

@New11What Kodiaq do you have, engine and gearbox and FWD or AWD so needing the Haldex Serviced @ 3 years / 30.000 miles or sooner.

?

How many miles has it done and what servicing has it had in the past?

EDIT.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/507554-oil-service-due-do-they-have-the-same-price

?

Did they set the Oil Service to Variable regime a year ago but leave the 'Inspection' for 12 months, so now?

  • 3 weeks later...

(I apologize for the delay - I was again away for a while)

To answer your questions about type of last service (minor vs extended) I need to look at the document I was given after the last service - will do that tonight.

So in general I don't need to go for the service and it is up to me ?

The car had 4-years warranty that ended before summer holiday.

My wife asked me this question today and I didn't have clear answer: what is the technical difference between MOT and this service ? I know that one, MOT, will allow you (or not ...) to drive the car from the legal point of view.
But do they check more or less the same parts (tyres, filters, etc) ? While doing MOT do they connect to car's computer ?

For me the answer is obvious (they are not the same) but when I started thinking about the low level technical differences I don;t have reliable answer.

They do not connect to the OBD in the UK @ MOT's.   YET.  They do in some States in the USA, & the EU spoke about it, and the UK were going along as told. But now free to do as they please.

MOT checks are just as they see on that day.

12 or 11 months between MOTs and it is for you to be sure things are safe, or have that done.

Amazed that you got Documents at the Last Service,  but anyhow it looks like someone maybe never reset or set the INSPECTION to suit your needs if it shows every time & it is an INSPECTION and not a Service Warning.

MOT and service are very different. If you wish to see what is tested at MOT, here is the manual: MOT inspection manual: cars and passenger vehicles - Guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

As an example, MOT doesn't care anything about how the engine is in terms of oil, filters, etc. as long as the emissions from the tailpipe aren't beyond limits.

As per Breezy_Pete. The MOT is a legal requirement and checks things that aren't covered by a service.

Reading above, I'd take an educated guess that your car is, or at least was, on a variable ( flexible ) service program which basically means it gets serviced every 2yr.  What may have happened is they haven't properly reset the service indicator when the car was last serviced, therefore it's just coming up with that inspection message.  It's quite common - has happened to me on previous VW products.

If you contact a Skoda dealer or Skoda customer services, they should be able to give you information on all the previous services the car has had since new. Entirely up to you whether you want to keep to the flexible service or change it to an annual service.

The SERVICE Indicator is not the INSPECTION indicator.

They maybe never reset the SERVICE indicator because they left at Variable, or they reset for in another 24 months / 18,000 -20,000 miles.

It is the INSPECTION indicator that was maybe left at each 12 months, rather than changed to no INSPECTION annually and at the same period as Servicing.

Or the SERVICE & INSPECTION can both be set for @ 9,400 miles / 372 days, or some are now 365 days and not 1 year and a week.

9 hours ago, Rooted said:

The SERVICE Indicator is not the INSPECTION indicator.

It has been on all my VW goup cars.

It will either say service due in...   service + inspection due in...    or inspection due in...

What does it say on yours?

It gets reset when they service my VW group cars or at the PDI

When does it get reset on your VW group car?

@kodiaqsportlineas you know i have no VW Group car on the road at the moment or liable to in the near future other than loan cars or demonstrators but ii have had in the past, and have bought and sold ones and worked on them and learn how things work and then remember instead of just finding out in some random way and giving duff gen.

I see you are less of a Main Dealer fan boy these days.  Strange that you have had so many cars and servicing but have not someone you can trust to do a proper job at a proper price.

Good if you have finally and got your brakes fitted.

Back to the point.

The cars arrive set to Variable / Flexible servicing, so no need for the Inspection not to be deleted for 12 months time.

If at the PDI the Service Regime is changed to Fixed then that is in 12 months, so Oil Service, no need for the INSPECTION.

Servicing started being call Oil & Inspection Services in the UK on 2020/

The Service & Inspection can be set to both be at 1 year or both at 2 years.

Inspection is not a Minor / Interim service and Service a Major service.    There is not just an INSPECTION on offer.

Remember at Services at Main Dealers to have that Body Inspection done and logged at Services for the Corrosion Warranty.

Even though the T&C,s of the Warranty do not Say bi-annual or periodic inspections are required.  Skoda UK will say if no record of them being done.

Skoda wanted their cake, and to eat it.

Needing long life (variable) service intervals to appeal to company, hire and fleet buyers, but also needing to ensure they were seen to be doing as much as possible to get customers through the doors of their franchised retailers more often than once every two years.

Skoda… “how are we going to do that then?”. “Let’s invent an alert on the dashboard, asking our customers to take their vehicle to their dealers for nothing more than a visual check over!”.

The ‘inspection’ warning was born. So too was a whole load of confusion and unnecessary charging by (some) dealers.

My car is 2019 diesel with ~49k mileage.

I've just checked the last bill from the "inspection/service" (it was carried out in October 2022) and it says:

*VAR2
Carried out 2nd Variable service using
 Long Life Oil
 Re-set reminder to Variable

(and below there is an additional stuff like CLEANER, FILTERELEM, etc...)

I cannot find in the invoice whether is was basic (minor) or extended (full/major) service.

How do I find it out ? Do I have to call them ?

Also what depends on if it was basic or extended ?

The online information they have at Dealers / Skoda is likely not much more than you know.

Not much needs doing.  Have the brakes ever had a service, not just an inspection?

2nd Variable Service sounds like there was the first one, so at 24 months / 18,000- 20,000 miles or sooner,

so now the second of the same.

Old days If it was a Oil & Filter service with a Pollen Filter replaced that looks very much like what was referred / called a Interim or Minor Service.

It was 2019 / 2020 that the Oil & Inspection Service & Extended Scope started being used in the Fixed Servicing & Maintenance.

Then a Major Service.   (Not that much about it being Major, just servicing really.)

?

Any record of the Brake Fluid changed at this 2nd Service if not at the 1st, or in between at 3 years / 30,000 miles.

That is an extra that needs paid for.  Unless included in a Service Plan.

..................

This is about the Fixed / Annual Servicing not Variable / Flexible, so different.
