Octavia IV 2023: any way to disable automatic doors lock at EVERY start after stop?

Featured Replies

Hello!

I recently upgraded from Octavia 2020 to Octavia IV 2023 (workplace leased car).

The most annoying of the few automatic features which I would prefare to be disabled is the

automatic door lock which occurs at EVERY drive start after every stop or even slow down

below 20 km/h. I looked through the settings and didn't find anything relevant to this.

I totally don't want to drive with locked doors as in case of accident it increasess the chance

of me being stuck in a car (which migh start burning) but it's very annoying to release the

doors lock at EACH acceleration. BTW, somewhere in the docs it even mentions that

activated doors lock will make it harder for emergency crews to open the doors.

Did I missed some setting or it's really not configurable?

The reason for the auto lock is its a anti hijack facility, so if you were to pull up at a junction or lights then no one can steal

out of the boot or even get into the car and nick it

.

and as far as getting in in the case of a accident then you can still open from inside or if the services need to get in they

would get in very easy.

And if you had not noticed when you unlock the car it only unlocks the drivers door (although I think you can change that)

The doors unlock if the airbags are activated

What worries me is the fact that everything is 'fly by wire'.  In an accident it is possible the electrics won't be working, the doors won't open and the windows won't open.  I have acquired a couple of the 'window breaking' hammers - one in the front of the car and one n the back.

^^^ This.

They will unlock and if someone needs in in an emergency they will break the door glass as can be done with a short sharp tap.

Glass breaking hammer.  (They really should be in every cars drivers side pocket, that are only a couple of quid.)

I guess theirs did not unlock.

Sad.

Best not guess why they drove into the water, or once in if they could open the doors when in the water, or think of opening the windows while they still could.

Does Auto / Anti Hijack Locking and unlocking get engineered to suit someone putting a car deep into water and even if the function is disabled do they test vehicles to see if the passenger or driver can open the doors when the car is in deep water?

You may well find that this autolocking can be configured differently via VCDS even if it isn't apparent how to do it via the inbuilt user interface.

I thought if the water was deep . It would have to be at the same level inside and outside to be able to open the door, or is that just in the films?

Yeah the external water pressure will make it hard to open the doors even when unlocked.

Guess the films exaggerate a bit to add a bit of drama.

Its quite true, you should open the windows fully as soon as possible and exit via the higher one, if no visibility follow where the bubbles go to find the upper side.

Best advice is be pro-active and try and avoid any situation that could put you in danger of submersion, lots of canals beside roads where I lived before and deaths were frequent, when an oncoming car swerves out to overtake and meets you head on the only survival chance you have is to swerve right (in my country) into the canal.

I fully understand all the desire of the engineers to prevent outside access. BUT, how about letting THE USER decide?

After all, in order to drive, you need to be a resonsible adult, don't you think the user can make his/her mind

when to lock and when not to? When I'm slowing down surrounded by dangerous people (arabs), I lock on my own initiative.

At most other cases - outside population isn't dangerous enough to justify increased chance of getting stuck inside as a result

of mild accident with slightly dent door. And you can't 100% rely on automatic system to unlock because the accident might

damage its connectors/wires too.

Unfortunately, there is a thrend among designers of various products (not only cars): "the user is like a kindergarden kid, he/she

doesn't know what's best for him/her, let us decide instead and God forbid letting him/her alter our decision".

There are so many configuration bits in this car systems, what harm would do one more controlling the auto doors lock?

Thanks for the suggestion but since my car is a workplace leased one, I can't make any modifications and I think that includes altering software

via VCDS too.

You could always 'unmodify' it back to how it was before returning it.

On such a recent car I'm a bit surprised it isn't configurable via the existing user interface though.

In the good old days you chose if you wanted it done by selecting,  & sometimes with some cars the Dealership had to set it for you.

If it can be reset that is not a modification, it is there now in the car, Factory approved software.

Stop giving lifts to them then 😂
