Original wheel/rim characteristics

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have an Octavia Mk IV (4x4 TDI 2.0 147 kW) and would like to know what are the characteristics of the original wheels. Where can I find such information?

I know they are 18" but appart from that, how wide are they (7, 7.5"?) what is the ET (46?), also is it 5x112 and 57.1mm?

I'm having a hard time finding "official" information.

I'm going to buy winter tyres (heading for 205/55R17) and with it 17" wheels. What ET value will do? According to manual it's 6.5Jx17 ET46.

Thanks a lot for the information.

Best,

fayorome

The Octavia MK4 owner's manual shows the following tyre and rim combinations for the use of snow chains.

Permitted rim and tyre combinations for mounting snow chains:

Rim dimensions

Tyre dimensions

6.5Jx16 ET46 5/112 57.1

205/60R16

6.5Jx17 ET46 5/112 57.1

205/55R17

Only use snow chains with links no larger than 9 mm, including locks.

@Carlston didn't bother to mention this, but the full size data is literally cast (alloys) or stamped (steels) into the wheel rims. For example, "7.5Jx18 ET48 5/112 57.1" is a 7.5inch wide, 18 inch diameter wheel with a 48mm inset, a 5 by 112mm pitch centre diameter and a 57.1 mm diameter centre spigot.

The data (size, ET etc) is usually on the rim, but on the inside, you might be able to photograph it by holding camera under car, although might need to move car slightly until info rotates to bottom, not in wheelarch

This Skoda rim catalogue has lot of size data, can order them from parts Dept, or get rims from other retailers.  Then just source the tyres on internet.

Mine are 17 inch wheels with Pirelli tyres.

Indeed, I saw this in the manual too. But it seems a bit strange, it means there's no way to use snow chains if my rims are 7Jx17?

Thanks all for your answers by the way, very helpful!

Why some wheels have left and right options? More specifically, why complete steel wheels from the link below have right and left side? I understand that asymmetric rims can have different left and right options so those rotate in a same direction, but why this steel wheel set has the different options? Actually, these steel rims have left and right options only when buying them as complete wheels set, so is it something up to the wheel design?

It is due to the tyre tread pattern rather that the wheel rim itself - asymmetric tyres must be rotated in the correct direction.

The first link is a complete wheel AND tyre set, so it comes with directional tyres which must be fitted on the correct side.

If you purchase a directional tyre, it will become either left or right...depending which way you fit it to the rim.

Once fitted to a rim, a directional tyre will be either a left tyre or right tyre...it can't be both.

So if you purchase a directional tyre that has been fitted to a rim so that it has become a left tyre, you would have to remove it from the rim and fit it the other way for it to become a right tyre, ie. a directional tyre can be either left or right but not both...depending which way it is fitted to a rim.

Thanks for the answers. I googled it just after I had posted and realised that it is about directional tyre that must be installed according to the rotation arrow.

I found unused 16" genuine Skoda rims for a decent price, but how to be sure that Skoda rims are genuine? Below is link to the rims I am considering to buy.

Genuine SKoda rims?
