Traffic light grand prix

Featured Replies

Had my first traffic light grand prix yesterday since buying the VRs:rolleyes:

I pulled up and out of nowhere comes an 'old skool' jaguar XJS 3.6l..twas obvious he was going to try and see me off as he couldn't stop revving! I don't normally indulge in racing but I thoguht it was a good opportunity to see the skoda's potential (it's still standard mind  ) needless to say the lights changed and altho he wasn't left in my fog he was certainly behind me and couldn't keep up! I've checked the 0-60 times and it seems around the high 7 - early 8 second mark so no major achievement...other than seeing the gutted look on his face as his pride and joy is left by a diesel!

Those "old school" jags can be a real handful at the lights. They're normally auto gearbox and the technique for lauching is normally "depress throttle pedal deep into the Wilton carpets".

How did you see his face.... you were well ahead winning???

My mate's old XJR 4.0 was definitely a "bury the throttle in the deep carpet" case in point. Was 250bhp though, so not sluggish. Was a big car to get moving though.

 And once though things are moving... they'd pretty much .. **** on anything! Really .. excellent cars

I had a rather amusing experience with a BMW a few weeks ago. Was heading back to Peterborough from Boston, and just hit the first bit of dual carriageway on the way in on the A15. Had a BMW behind me, so I thought I'd have a little play. I've got a 2.0 Focus at the moment (vRS on order) and he was alongside me, holding about steady, slowly creeping up alongside. I figured it must be a 520 or something similar. I looked across at him (it was dark so couldn't really see anything, but I guess he looked back) and then he suddenly disappeared lol. Turned out it was a 535D and he was taking the **** lol. I'm looking forward to being able to do similar things then the Fab finally turns up:thumbup: Nothing better than a sleeper:cool:

No offence, but he'l do exactly the same thing when you've got your vRS as well.

Traffic light Grand Prix's are a part of my every day driving, I can't help it :o

You know you can trust walkie....... or so you would think, muwahahahahaha

Yeah, I'm not stupid enough to think that I'd beat a 535D in the Fab, but I'm sure that there will be a lot of people who will be surprised when they try to do the same thing against it.

now before any of you follow this with any remarks about my driving, speed limits, "not more racing stories" ......etc i would just like to say ...... well nothing really ....

i dont really talk about my incounters but i was up behind a merc c320 cdi from 30mph to 110 then he started pulling away (he was trying...as i passed him further down the bypass he looked surprised, and the fabia had just done 45 miles on a summers day so maybe a bit of heat soak ?)

mostly dual carriage way driving or motorway driving because thats the only place you can really out your foot down. others include a subaru impreza 2.0 wrx saloon from about 60 up untill he was willing to go, bmw 325i, 330i, 330d, alfa 2.0 t spark and 1.9jtd, countless other dickheads

my car is not standard, just the 1 click and green filter.

i dont want any negative comments from this, just letting some people who care know what cars i have had a little play with

Not saying a thing... Having to bite my lip mind...! :P

Naivety reigns supreme...!

i like the way most vrs drivers compare their modified cars against standard other cars and then say "i bet he was annoyed to see a skoda go by" or "he bought that car that cost £20-£30k and it's no faster", a) they probably weren't that bothered B) they have lots more creature comforts and safety c) they haven't bought the car necessarily for it's speed d) their car isn't modified, if it was remapped or had some other mods then they would simply leave the vrs for dust.

I know this is a very generalised statement and isn't aimed at anyone in particular etc etc etc etc etc etc, driving stories are pretty pointless really as everyone has something to prove and wants to get the last word in.

like me, the end

I backed off over the bridge as i'd already proven the point I was faster and he overtook me with a rather gutted expression, still trying to race me...I just didn't feel the need to carry on after that :)

against what most owners seem to think the fabia vRS isn't super quick and won't beat most of these other cars.

if the drivers of the other cars are willing to drive their cars as hard as possible and be ready to race like you then they will probably beat you every time.

in my opinion of course :)

i dont know why i quoted hellfire above .... sorry

Oh ritey, he over took with the usual... ****ed off face? I love that face! Nice one

i agree with what your saying rich, my point is most 30 year old men driving their bmw 320d probably wont care that my car is faster, as they probably have more important things to worry about. having said that it is still very funny and i'd be a hipocrit (cant spell sorry) if i said I have never done anything like this before.

Re the old jags, as has been said, the auto boxes and sheer weight of the beasts mean that they're a tad slow off the line. Once going, I would have thought any Xj above the 3.2 (maybe even that one?) would fly past any Fabia, simply due to aerodynamics and gearing.

535d . . . awesome car, my mate's got one with the M-sport package. It's the dog's danglies although at over £40k I'd get a Cayman myself!
