VRS 245 - Buzzing (mooing) noise on Overrun

Featured Replies

New to the Octavia world so nice to meet you, I have a VRS 245 (2019) which has an irritating noise when lifting off the accelerator, it is a kind of buzzing / mooing noise when the engine is on overun and coasting with the revs dropping. I get the same noise when out of gear, so it is an engine-related noise rather than  transmission.

Car is standard at the moment and acts as the "family sensible" car of the fleet, I am really enjoying the drive at the moment though, great all rounder.

Thanks in advance

Probably worth getting a short vid posted up here or an audio file of some kind.....one person's Moo'ing is quite different to another person's idea of what a moo sounds might be....joking aside....audio/video pls.

Turbo dump valve (wastegate)?

Does it do it when stationary and you rev the engine and let it fall to idle?

Op said it does.

I am just going to take the car out and try and get an audio clip of the noise in question. My thoughts were pointing towards the Recirculation Valve or something Vacuum related, as vavuum will be highest on overun.

Thanks for the comments thus far and I will be back shortly.

Probably OT and nothing to do with the question. Because it makes noise when stationary.   But.  If the car has a VAQ diff has it had services at 30,000 miles / 3 years?

VAQ diff not serviced yet, it is coming up to 30k and I was going to book it in at that point. From what I can see they are not often serviced properly so I might end up doing it myself to make sure the filters are cleaned.

Looking at the car it seems to be a cold engine issue as i could not replicate it when the car was warm

This is no criticism of you. It is just the nature of car advice forums and when noises are the issue, it can be very hard to give advice without hearing what you mean.

To me a woosh sound is different to a buzzing sound. (edit actually you said mooing and someone else mentioned woosh!) As someone else posted, if it is a woosh whenever coming off throttle that sounds like the diverter, that is what they do, let off boost immediately. In the standard set up the release is internally inside the turbo.  Some woosh is still normal though. It is quite noticeable on my Golf R.   Some boy racers obviously change the set up to make the discharge outside the turbo and make the noise very very noticeable!

But that is at odds with a buzzing noise, which to me, sounds like some sort of vibration or resonance and could be literally anything under the car or in the engine bar, heat shields, fuel lines, axle shields goes on and on.......

So typically after I posted this on the forum it went away. Which then led me to belive that this is a cold only issue, so next day I have been out with the car and nothing. It took a few days for it to come back again, and this is what I am getting (See attached).

It is when the revs are dropping, It doesn't record well.

I wondered if it was a known issue as my friend as something slightly similar on his EA888 Seat. I have had a lot of cars, turbo, supercharged, modified and it is not a "normal " sound. I will investigate further, it might be one of those thing that drives me mad.

That sounds to like a resonating vibration.

Someone like @Crasher or @Warrior193 would probably be able to give you a more knowledgeable opinion on the noise, but if I had to come up with an explanation for it, I'd be looking at some sort of heat shield (or other "thing") that's not secured properly and is vibrating with engine RPM to cause the noise.

From previous readings people have mentioned fuel line vibration?

It sounds very muffled on the recording, and a lot of that terrible digital artefact sound,  but I tend to agree it must be some sort of resonance / vibration.... You may need two people to help track it down if it will do it in neutral and rev...

Did you get.to the bottom of the issue as mine does this annoying buzzing
