Abs eps tpm after changing wheels.

Recommended Posts

Hi all

As the title states I've swapped some new to me wheels onto my 170 Elegance and the dash has lit up like a xmas tree.

What is the likely culprit ? Abs sensor is something else ?

And are all 4 tyres actually the same size?

The newer tyres are 235 opposed to 225 being the only difference.

A Total diameter / circumference change would make no difference you just reset the TPMS.

Tried this. Still lights up.

Different total diameter will usually put the tpms light on. Does it have sensors in the wheels?

How would I tell mate ?

If you changed the tyre width then the diameter is different, as for the sensors if you wiggle the valve it will move easily without sensors and you will feel some resistance if it does have them.

Judging by the old tyres vs new, the newer tyre valves appear to be slightly more rigid than the older valve.

The car as it left the factory never had a TPMS with sensors in the wheels.

That does not mean that someone did not mod the car and what was on the car were wheels with Sensors and the car has the Indirect TPMS now rater than the Direct.

Changing the Total diameter / circumference does not mean that Warnings / Faults need show.

So faulty abs sensor perhaps  ?

If it only happened after you changed wheels then there is your fault. It would be very rare for an abs sensor to pack up afterwards.

So the wheels are causing the issue one way or another 🤔

@Davidoff1234If you did nothing else then sounds like.

Was it you that changed the wheels, jacked the car up, tightened them etc.

Yes mate.  What are you thinking?

And are all 4 tyres actually the same size? The same size, not just the same width!

Perhaps you have misworded that, I dont think you meant to say that the vast majority of ABS sensor failures happen during wheelchanges.

What is the full size of each tyre fitted? Are all 4 the same section, profile and rim diameter? Are the 4 wheels all the same diameter and width?

If everything is not exactly the same on each corner, then you could run into issues with these systems because the wheels will not all be running at the same speed.

Another thing that can cause what you are describing is a flat or disconnected battery. The ABS module in particular gets quite upset when this happens. To reset it, with the engine running, turn the steering wheel fully left then fully right before returning to the centre. This resets the steering angle sensor and makes the controller happy again. I'd suggest trying this before you go any further, it's quick to do and you'll know straight away if it has worked.

A fault scan of the ABS module would also be worth doing, just to see what it thinks is going on. It may help guide further fault finding.

Old wheels back on and still getting this pesky abs eps tpm error ! Isn't allowing me to set the tyre pressure. Have done the steering wheel reset and no difference.  Also getting a slowing down motion as if running out of fuel or braking. This disappears after pulling over and journey then normal.
