Thinking of downsizing from a Karoq - any recommendations please?

Featured Replies

I've owned my Karoq Edition since May 2018 (1.5 TSI 150 PS DSG, brand new from launch) and am wishing to change it for a smaller car which the wife would be comfortable to drive. When I bought my Karoq I paid for lots of extras such as the Canton sound system, heated steering wheel, Auto Light Assist, and an aftermarket tow bar fitting. I am keen to keep the following safety/comfort features for my Karoq's replacement which could be a petrol or a hybrid car, and either a small SUV or a regular car-shape, and a dealer tester car from a few years old would be fine rather than brand new. My Karoq only has about 14,000 miles on the clock after 6 years.

REQUIREMENTS

Automatic Transmission (DSG preferred or a similar two-clutch system)

Traffic Sign Recognition

Blind Spot Notification

Auto-Braking if collision anticipated

Lane Assist

Front Assist radar scanning with auto braking

Pedestrian Monitor

Electronic Handbrake with automatic hill-hold

Powerful Sound System (deep bass, sweet and clear treble)

Electric Towbar (to carry a Thule Cycle Rack and two electric bikes)

Front Electric Windows

Rear Reversing Camera with Rear Audible Parking Sensors

Satellite Navigation with Voice Control

Dab+ Radio with Bluetooth, Steering Wheel Control, and Voice Control

Electrically-Adjusted Driver’s Seat with 2 memories

Electrically-Adjusted Folding Door Mirrors with 2 memories

Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

LED Headlights

Heated Front Seats

Digital Cockpit

Keyless Entry with Remote Central Locking

Alarm with Interior Monitoring

USEFUL IF AVAILABLE

Mobile Phone Charging Pad

Electric Tailgate opening switch inside the cabin

Ambient Interior Lighting

360-degree Birds-Eye-View Camera

Driver-Tiredness Monitor

A high sitting position

A soft, comfortable ride.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate this very much. Thank you!

If you want electric handbrake and autohold then you will have to look outside of Skoda as if you step down to Kamiq or Scala you get manual handbrake.

I'd probably look towards Toyota.

VW Golf or T-Roc, both smaller inside and out than the Karoq. I suspect with your required options list it would have to be a factory order. Are you bothered by the VED rates that kick in when the list price goes over £40,000. If you were buying a 1.5 DSG SE L Karoq today that list of options would take the list price over the £40K, with VED rates of £1095 first year and £600 per year for years 2 through 6.

If you want smaller, easy to park etc.

How about VW T-cross or Taigo, or Toyota Yaris Cross, or Ford Puma

If want it upmarket too, Try a Lexus LBZ or new mini Aceman

Was in similar position last year. We were after a smaller car, boot spce for golf clubs, electric cart + other golfing nicknaks, economy and something that would be happy driving mostly short distances around town. And had to be a good deal.

Cut a long story short, we bought a Toyota Yaris Cross Sport and added the safety kit.  ( an excel would have given all of that + electric boot but I hated the interior - the sport has the suede like seats. )

We ended up with an unbelievable deal but that was down to lucky timing more than anything else. Can give you a full 9mth review if you want. Basically the boot is briliant given the car's dimensions but that comes at the price of rear seat space - there isn't any. The legendary Toyota reliability maybe there but that's little wonder when you see the materials used. Our Karoq Edition was a solid car, the Yaris Cross is anything but. The main driver is delighted with it so that's all that matters. The Hybrid system has added approx 10mpg over and above our 1.5DSG Karoq.

The boot maybe slightly smaller, but if I had my time again, I'd buy a Hybrid Renault Captur.

p.s. Since we looked, Lexus has brought out a small SUV based on the Yaris Cross. The boot would have ruled it out for us, but by all accounts it's a better built thing. The base model, which come with lots of std equipment is priced on par with the Yaris Cross Excel, higher end models cost a fortune tho. However if you're buying on PCP, I've been told the Lexus comes out reasonably well.

The smaller Toyota's have the legendary Toyota drive trains but they have some questionable plastics.

Drove it the other week for the first time in ages. One thing I did note was a few squeaks from the dashboard. Had the Karoq for 3.5yr and not a single creak.

I usually go round as many dealers as possible, and ask the sales staff to try and build, on computer, a car to fit my requirements. Far easier than spending time navigating manufacturer’s websites. I am lucky in having just about every make dealerships within a few miles of home, though. I do have to take my 99 year old mother with me, to see if she can get in and out!😀
