Learner drivers - will newly proposed UK rules become law?

Her proposed bill has the support of all parties, who in their right mind would vote against it, so yes it's almost certain to become law.

Just two questions - how will it be policed and what will be the punishment for offenders?

How do you stop more road deaths with young drivers? Put more police on the roads. I'm sure we all know of areas, especially at night, where certain areas have been turned in to Grand Prix circuits. Obviously the police know about them too, it's just they do eff all about it. Why? well obviously due to police numbers, but then the law is an ass because when they do get caught, it's a slap on the hands.

How many deaths will this proposal prevent?  Oh I'll take a wild guess and say none because you can't do this on the cheap.

"Young male car drivers aged 17-24 are four times as likely to be killed or seriously injured compared with all car drivers aged 25 or over."

Looking back its a miracle that I survived the period.

He he - me too TBH - I had a crash 29 days after passing but that one wasn't actually my fault as someone drove out of a side road give way into the side of me as I was stationary waiting to turn into it.

Other than that I recall being a bit 'daft' at times...

One big problem I have with this way of thinking...

Around a fifth of all those killed or seriously injured were as a result of collisions involving cars driven by a young driver....

They want to impose restrictions on the first six months of a new driver's life, but those six months or so are precisely when they're just getting their confidence up.

It seems to me that it's the period afterward, ie 17-24, in which their overconfidence and kittensery come into play and make them do the stupid things.

But more than that, looking around at my most recent experiences, this one fifth of KSIs only "involved "but was not necessarily the fault of, the younger driver. Lately I've seen white vans racing each other, Tesla drivers being complete nobs because they think power is superior to skill, and large exec/saloon cars being whanged about because they think watching Top Gear makes them skilled.

Mostly male drivers and not one looked below 35.

I know it was a long while ago, but I passed my bike test at 16, so had a year of building up my confidence and road sense before moving ‘up’ to a car at 17.  I believe this helped, because you are more exposed on a bike.  (Although seeing some L-plated idiots on scooters I might have to re-assess!)

I’m in favour of anything that reduces accidents, especially those involving youngsters.  Not least because, of my various grandchildren, one lad is 20, drives a company van, one girl is coming up to 18 and learning, another girl has turned 17 this week, also learning.

Must admit I expect it will become law but I doubt it will make any difference.

What is needed is better enforcement of current laws - driving dangerously, irresponsibly, drunk, etc is just that whether you're a new driver or not.

I think she has been watching Highway cops on saturday mornings, covering New Zealands roads?

I don't see how creating more offences that can be comittted improves things.

We already have a system in which young drivers can lose their licences with less points for two years.

We need more traffic enforcement in general rather than just targeting youth
