Spare wheel

Featured Replies

Hi, just wanted to gauge people's views on whether or not to purchase a spare wheel from Skoda.
touch wood I haven't been caught stranded with a flat, and I'm aware that I have a picture repair kit in the boot, however once the foam has been used the tyre can not be reused.
is a spare wheel worth the expense ?

Only you know how far you travel, if being stuck for hours might be an issue where there are no 4th Emergency Services that carry a spare wheel if you wreck one.

If you go away during the festive holidays to the likes of Scotland where it might not be possible to get a new tyre for a few days due to places being closed.

The Tyre can be reused if you clean it out and get a repair done.   Maybe do not use the kit with the car, use a £6 can of some type of Tyre Weld.

Good if even you have a spare wheel but not in a place it is safe to change the wheel until later.

AS has been put.

Depends where you live, how you drive, how you look after your car and tyres, possibly how low you run the tyre tread and how lucky or not you are.

The foam supposedly goes out of date, the tyre inflaters generally can be quite wheezy and possibly overheat or blow a fuse if trying to inflate a tyre from flat and the pressure gauge no always too accurate.

If you carry a spare tyre it needs to be kept at the correct pressure for use, many aren't, some in older cars are flat so need inflating at time of need.  They carry a spare wheel and tyre in the boot (extra weight) for years then it's not fit for purpose when required.

I didn't carry a spare wheel in various cars for over 30 years just a reliable manual foot pump.  In 47 years of driving in UK (and some bits of Europe) I've had to use the manual  footpump three separate times and doing so got me home easily.  On the other side once a tyre was destroyed (bloody lazy lorry drivers) about 7 miles from home and we did have to wait for the Breakdown service.

My wife got a puncture in the Fabia but got the car home easily enough (decades of experiences of old cars and what to do) the VWSkoda TPMS system was very tardy in reporting the issue and in this case only of use to someone who doesn't know enough about driving.  In the boot she had the tyre inflater and (out-of-date) foam, later she added a manual footpump.  I had previously checked the 12v tyre inflater worked, noisy, annoying and slow but it does work (with provisos mentioned. before.

The foam and jack kit (as linked to below) can be purchased from any VAG parts department by quoting OEM part number 6V0093860B. The Czech price is 1459CZK (about £50.16) but the UK price might be slightly more. The kit includes everything except for the actual spare wheel, which can be purchased separately.

The usual size spare wheel to use for the Fabia MK3 is 185/60R15 6Jx15 ET38 5/100 57.1

mytyres are selling the Alcar 7760 6Jx15 ET38 5/100 57.1 steel rim for about £47.80 including shipping to the UK. Alcar steel rims are made in Switzerland and are one of the top aftermarket steel rim manufacturers. The Alcar 7760 has exactly the same specification as the Fabia MK3 steel rim and looks exactly the same as you can see in the below photo.

Purchasing the steel rim separately, allows the tyre to be choosen separately. Below, I've given the Uniroyal RainExpert 5 185/60R15 84H as an example. For a spare tyre it's probably best not to choose a directional tread pattern so that the spare wheel can be correctly fitted in any position on the car.

I obtained a matching alloy wheel, the molded centre tool storage complete with tools and the fixing clamp to hold the spare in the boot from Ebay and then had a tyre fitted.

Plenty of spare wheels and jack kits on e bay as those from a VWs polo will also fit a mk 3 fabia
