1.4 TSI CZDA fuel rail leak

Featured Replies

Octavia failed to start this morning - first major fault on this vehicle since new. What happened - very long crank and eventually started, but very rough idle, then engine stopped within 2 seconds.

Strong smell of fuel and found fuel dripping onto belly plate at front of engine. RAC called, and diagnosed probable leakage from fuel rail - recovery to workshop required!

No indication of any problem when I drove it two days ago.

My usual independent (VAS Technical) is unable to fit in until next month 😭 - so spent most of the afternoon looking for someone who can fix it. Finally decided on Chamberlains on Beverly Way as I have been dissatisfied in past experiences with three of my local Skoda garages.

RAC tech said that this type of failure is not uncommon with this engine - a quick search on here didn't show anything - is there anyone here who has had a similar failure?

I'm sure I read a technical bulletin for these, something to do with the bolts incorrectly torqued at the factory if I remember correctly.

I could only find two recalls relating to fuel systems, neither of which appear to apply to MY16 Octavia.

- R/2004/215; dated 17/2/2005 - 'tandem fuel pump cover bolts'

- R/2011/171; dated 15/12/2011 - 'Fuel may leak'

I am unable to find any relevant TPIs relating to fuel rail leaks - is anyone able to point me in the right direction?

The NHTSA safety recall for North American EA211 fuel rail bolt failures (VW recall code - 24Gi) appears to be for the 1.4TSI.

I see that the EA211s for that market have been manufactured in Silau, Mexico since 2021 - can anyone verify where North American EA211 engines for MYs 2016 to 2018 were made?

Collected the car this morning, failure was due to failed injector seal caused by loose securing bolt on number 1 injector.

There has been no work done on the fuel system of this vehicle from new.

Report of this failure submitted to DVSA.

Hmmm...   got me slightly worried now for my CZEA Kodiaq...

What model year? The North American recall was for MY16 to 18. It seems that VAG Europe has done nothing!

Ist registered March 2018.

I'd consider having the injector rail securing bolts checked - especially number 1.

It's due for a service so I'll ask for it to be checked if I don't get there first

Hiya! I'm new here but thought I'd see if anyone ever had a solution or proper recall for the fuel rail bolt issue?

I have a 2017 Seat Ibiza (sorry its no Skoda lol) with the EA211 CJZD 1.2TSI 110HP engine. A year and a half ago, I had the exact same issue; turned the car over, wasn't cracking properly, fuel start pouring out and then smelt like I was in a petrol station.

2 fuel rail bolts had broken (one sheared of completely, the other one loose with slight damage) and injector 1 had two broken/split seals...

I can smell a small amount of fuel coming through the air con (mainly at slow speeds not motorway cruising) and I'm super paranoid it's the fuel rail bolt or injector issue again...

Checking my plate online appears to show no recalls for anything has been issued (which is great) however the rail bolts must be an issue right??

Cheers!

I've got the same issue on my Skoda Kodiaq 1.4 TSI. Broken o-ring of one of my injector due to not screwed bolt. It was causing a fire on my car with my baby daughter inside! Which is the current status of this issue? I would like to go to a lawyer with all the possible information. Thanks!

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Did you actually have a fire caused by this failure?

I filed a report to the DVSA detailing my fault and highlighting the NHTSA recall, they dismissed my report, saying that there was considered to be no fire risk!

No, there was no fire, but the mechanic told me that so much fuel was leaking that I was extremely lucky. The thought that my daughter was in the car at the time still makes me shudder at what could have happened.

By the way, after fixing the O-ring and tightening the slightly loose bolt, did the issue ever come back for you?

I'm thinking about selling it if it's not sure. I just bought it used 40 days ago

Thanks for your response!

No issues since June last year. Apart from this single issue, I think the 1.4TSI is a brilliant engine - although I wouldn't say no if I was offered a straight swap for a 2.0TSI 245! 😄

Eheheh that's good to hear! What was the solution for your issue? Just changing the o-ring and tightening correctly the bolt? Or other interventions?

From the invoice, I believe that it had simply loosened, resulting in damage to the sealing ring.

Seems that replacement of the damaged seal and correctly tighten the bolts was sufficient for fix.

Perfect! Thanks for the feedback! I will write you back about my experience

Have a great Sunday!
