To much engine oil?

Featured Replies

Hello.

So i had a oil change and the mechanic put whole 5l of oil in 1.6 tdi engine although it suppose to take only 4.3l. Can this extra oil cause problems or is it going to be ok?

Quite often they take more than the service sheet says, It's what the dipstick says is that matters.

That dip stick is not easy to read.

Is the oil not already a little bit colored?

Even though not easy to read can you when the engine is cold and the oil is see there it is wet up to above the cross hatch area.

Or is it higher than the flat bit above the cross hatch.

Then check again when the Oil is at a Normal Operating temperature and after the engine has been stopped a few minutes.

As said hard to see. I would say it is up to the top of plastic part.

You really need to get your mechanic to extract the excess oil as soon as possible.

Recommend that the vehicle is not driven until oil level has been reduced until it reads no more than max line.

At a guess, around 1/2 litre too high, might not be critical - but excess oil does need to be extracted ASAP - and the question needs to be asked, why did your mechanic not check oil level was correct on completion of the service.

Easiest way would be to get a thin tube and suck it out of the dipstick, a lot less hassle than the other options. I usually use extraction pump or brake bleeder works nicely if you get oil warm.

No point having a dog or paying out on one  and wagging your own tail.   If a mechanic, technician or fitter over fills the engine oil then have them or their boss confirm they did.  If they can not be trusted to do that correctly then the other work they did needs checked by a competent person.

Did you notice the dipstick is also cracked?

How do you know he put 5 litres in? A lot of the time guys don't wait untill the oil is fully drained or do the oil filter last (which drains some oil back to the sump) and put the sump bolt back in. Even if they put the specified 4.3 litres say they are adding too much oil.

I was not looking at the pictures but I have now.  When they break up it is more than a PITA.   So the OP can say if the mechanic noted it.

Nobody noticed it. I was there. He sad he used all the oil.

Might have the rest for his own service when it's due if you know what I mean.

We know what you mean,

Then there is the customer hands in oil to someplace that will use customer supplied oil and it goes away into a staff member car and other oil is used.

There is the wiped clean and not replaced oil filter and a dirty mark put on the filter.  (A KwikFit special.)

There is the Vacuum the oil and then supposed replace the Sump Plug and refill etc.

Just the sump plug is charged for and not replaced, only a couple of quid taken by false pretenses there. Customer robbed and VAT fraud and Mony a mickle maks a muckle. All these sump plugs still in stock for the staffs own jobs.

The Motor Trade is as it has been since a long time now.

Literally sucked out 2.5 dcl of oil. Should be less critical now. The problem is i leave for holiday in the middle of the night so no time to drive back to shop. But will let him know next time.

I always  supply my own oil, even to official skoda service, because it is much cheaper and and i know what exactly im putting in.

I dont really care about the left overs since i never need it. (The engine is  burning very very little oil betwin services). But i do not like them following official  recommendations.

It's luck of the draw sometimes, there are fitters, technicians and master techs. All depends who works on your car and if they even care about doing things correctly. I don't know what the Vag dealerships are like but at my place I wouldn't let some of the guys work on a lawnmower.
