"Not a skoda!" feeling back at me!

Featured Replies

Going in to work, a Toyota corolla matched my Fabia vRS on the highway!

This in the vRS's favourite 80+kmph speed range..

The standard corolla 1.8 is auto and has only 127hp, so I have no idea how he managed it - even a standard vRS would have nailed him.

I wonder if the 44 degee C temps had anything to do with it.

The only thing I can come up with is that he must have had an engine transplant or a TRD supercharger......looked totally standard from outside.

Now I know how people driving uber-expensive cars must feel when a furby nails them dead! (NOT a nice feeling).

Personally I'm hoping that maturity arrives before senility....

Cheers

Bas

There is a Corolla on the market with 180 bhp. It's nearly as quick as an Octy vRS.

They do a TSport with the 190 Celica engine in it. (Edit Technically 189 but who's counting?) You would certainly hear it if he was trying - 600rpm+ before anything happens

Bloody awful engine to live with :thumbdwn:

Edit: On the power band it's quicker than the Octy but you have to plod through 1st with no torque so the 60 time might be worse.

I'm not convinced the Celica 190hp engine is that capable in the Corolla. In the past I've *just* pulled past one on a long uphill duel carriageway. On the flat or corners, I'm sure he'd have nailed me. And my car is hardly the fastest thing in the world. Incidentally, it's more than possible he wasn't trying but I'm inclined to think he was as the exhaust puffed a tiny bit of smoke once or twice! I personally think I had the gearing advantage as I didn't have to change from 4th but looking at the exhaust puffing he had to change, maybe he had difficulty keeping in the power band. Either way, I was suprised when I punched the reg into RAC when I got home (I thought it was something far more humble at the time!) to find it was the 190bhp T-sport!

think yourself lucky... FenSport run a humble looking Corolla packing celica GT4 running gear that does the 1/4 in something like 12secs.

that would make most of not all the cars on here look silly.

That 190 engine (and carp 6-speed box if it's the same as Celica) take a hell of a lot of concentration and practice to get right - every gearchange is a battle due to the box being so bad and if it takes more than about 1/2 second you're off the power band and it's yawn time until it's back on the boil.

Noisy crap IMO.

The weird thing is that the Corolla is lighter than the Celica but goes much slower with the same engine and gearbox - it also has a lower drag coefficient - Wierd no

In the same way the Polo Sport TDi which weighs 1300kg gets to 60mph in 10.4s as opposed to 11.1s for the Fabia TDi which weighs 1235kg, both with the same engine and gearbox.

Sales tactics.

Well the Corolla 1.8 is 137 Hp .. not 127.. are u sure it was an Automatic? cause a Manual 1.8 Corolla can do 0-100 in around 9 or even less.. so that expalins wut happened with u lol

yeah but it was between 80 and 140 km/h, surely the torque advantage should kicked in. I'm convinced that the ambient temps played a big part in matters (hence my other new threads on cooling mods....)

You Maybe right... but i've seen a corolla pullin away next to me above 80 and trust me i was somehow shocked because of the power that car showed.. i also thought that day that he had done somethin to it even thought it looked standard to me...i guess we need to find the 80-120 time of this car

Well just done a check.. the 1.8 is actually 145 Hp and weighs around 1250 Kg!! but a poor top speed of only 180 ( it would fall apart if it goes beyond that anyways lol)

I'll bet my hat it was a Corolla Compressor. This was an end of line special edition T sport with a supercharger bolted on. They made 250 for the UK market and It develops 215BHP and 160Lb Ft Torque. 0-60 in 6.9, top speed 143MPH.

It still got luke warm reviews, mainly due to the fact that Toyota asked just under £20K for a bland looking, ordinary handling hot hatch.

4 Car review of Corolla Compressor

Well the Compressor version doesnt come to the Gulf Area.. the only models we get are the 92 HP 1.3 and 145 HP 1.8 thats it

Let's hope it was a 1.8 then!!!

Chris

Looks like I've lost my favourite Top Hat in a foolhardy bet then.:(

I always found that +90 mph in the Fabia when it was standard was terrible, no real urgency, this was the biggest relief for me come remap time as it really helped the power delivery from 90 upwards.
