What would be a SMALLER but sporty replacement for my RS?

Featured Replies

I'm considering changing my RS, I don't really need a big car anymore.

Mum won't be with me much longer as she's deteriorating with dementia, my beloved dog (soulmate) has also gone, so it's just me now.

So any ideas for something that's smaller, but sporty and a similar spec to the RS?

Ta.

I'd go for a the non rsline fabia I think they are called sport monte Carlo or something, very similar looking and still a nippy engine. How much do you value comfort as they aren't going to be as good as the Octavia.

Bit (OK, a lot) heretical on this forum but what about a Hyundai i30N?

My nephew has one, quite impressive.

Unfortunately they've discontinued the petrol N series.

Alpine 110?

Cupar Leon is bit smaller, and still has VW group bits

If you want a real pocket rocket try an Abarth

How about a Smart #1 Brabus if you want performance.  I have a feeling they share components with Volvo EX series

Just had a thought you can now preorder an Alpine A290 (the sporty version of the forthcoming Renault 5).

However If you want luxury (in a not big size) rather than sportiness, then maybe a Lexus LBX.

+1

The New 8.5 Golf GTI is £40,000 or so, then you can go Club Sport.. more money.

Is that the budget you are at @TheWanderer

Is a BMW a possibility.  Bargains around of sporty things of all kinds when a newer model is due.

I'm retired now, so the RS will have to fund the majority of the replacement. I'm going to avoid a Golf GTi as it's broadly similar in insurance, BMW not interested in, for the insurance costs.

Looking at small hatchback, Toyota Yaris GT or similar size

Well Toyota GR Yaris are aplenty.   Probably the best fast small car.  Insurance might be high.

I do not fit in one very well, i tried an automatic at a special dealers day and knew i would get more points or a ban as i would be tempted to show anyone up my arse just how well it went.

I'm a short house, 5' 8", so should fit in one. I might have a look at one in the next few days.

Might sell my plate too, as it seems to bring me nowt but trouble.

Hyundai i20N??

Can't get a petrol one. Hyundai have stopped doing them.

Looking at a Polo GTi and then nearly fainted when it came out at £32700 for a decent spec. Toyota Yaris GR is slightly better at £29,400.

If you want to stay with similar spec and performance then the obvious is to go for a Golf GTi or Golf GTE?

Having had the Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor as part of my "possibles" list before getting my vRS this year I'd avoid going for the Cupra Leon due to the build quality and materials quality.

Benefit of the Golf will be that with the new car just being launched you'll probably pick up a 6 month old car for a good discount..... Or even a new pre-registered one maybe.

Even New not yet registered.

New Mini Cooper S is out. 2.0 lt Petrol.

But as with many cars, auto only.   & There will be the Current Models sitting waiting on buyers. Mini Cooper S John Clark Works. (Not just JCW trim)

Then there is the New Countryman for a not Small Car.

Weirdly after years of the Suzuki Swift being a bit of a Mini wannabe/clone that new Mini front end just looks like the new Suzuki Swift to me!!!!! :D :D :D

I think that the Mini is going to be too low for me, the RS is low.

I'll have to have a good look around at all the sites and reviews. Shame that Hyundai has killed of the petrol N series though, Honda is too expensive as well.

You can get a Fabia SEL with the 1.5 now if the Monte Carlo isn't to your taste.

Still available from stock and pipeline though if you can find one...

I can't just do it just like that, I need to have a look, sit in it and do a test drive, then arrange a deal, but the killer could be the insurance.

Hi.

If you need any help with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.

I had a drive in a Focus ST today (the newest version), it was excellent. Great interior, goes very well, handles well and a manual gearbox too👍🏻

Soz but a manual gearbox is an instant fail, I haven't driven a manual car for the best part of 15 years or more and I don't intend to start now, especially with a damaged knee, can't afford it anyway.
