Reversing camera image - can you see the car's own number plate?

Featured Replies

I might be going mad here, but I got into the car today and reversed (as usual) out of the drive and noticed that I could see the car's rear number plate curving up in both bottom corners of the camera image.

I've never noticed this before and at first I thought the number plate might be unstuck at either end or even that the camera somehow got nudged, but everything looks fine.

Do others see the number plate?

Yes, I do too. Like you, I didn't notice it to start with. Probably took me a couple of months!

Having said that, I think it might be possible to move the camera direction slightly by applying finger pressure and attempting to move the outer transparent surface. I haven't deliberately tried this as I don't want to spoil the current set-up.

As a 'reversing camera sceptic', I am completely won over through using it to couple my boat trailer as I can now position the tow-ball so precisely that all I have to do is lower the trailer socket vertically to engage it. Absolute boon with a heavy boat.

Weird - it looked so odd I had to get out and check.  Had the car for over a year although it's my wife's and I probably only drive it once a week.

I've heard the plastic lens cover can drop off so that was one of my thoughts.  So suggest you don't try and move it!

On my Kodiaq, suspect Karoq the same, you could change the camera operation using the icons down RH side of the display.

Options are parallel parking guidelines, parking in supermarkets space guidelines, tow hitch assistance where camera looks down on tow bar, and reverse out of space option where you get a wide angle fisheye view .

Sounds like you may have inadvertently selected this option.

I guess you have a posher version than I do 😀- all I see is this:

I didn't even know those brightness etc adjustments were there.  I wonder if the recent software update the dealer did has affected things?

Having said that, it's always amazing that you can notice something you've never picked up on before and then it sticks out like sore thumb

I don't have the bells and whistles either. My image looks the same as Rory's although I'm pretty sure I can see a thin sliver of number plate all the way across.

Something has altered inasmuch as your query Rory is exactly the same as mine back in 2019 - the reverse camera gave a nice clear picture until one day the number plate became visible and the picture was not as clear.........

Yes - turns out some of the comments I've made in this thread are exactly the same as yours in 2019!

Odd that some posters in that thread say their's has always been like that, then a few say their's has changed.

It does seem like the view is now a combination of the wide angle and tow ball view.  To be honest, we don't use the camera much - even my wife prefers to look around - so it doesn't bother us, it's just a bit weird that it seems to have changed.  We mostly use it when backing off the drive (as shown in the image I uploaded) as we have the village school in our road and so there can be quite a lot of people walking back and forth, so the wider the view the better.

I might ask the dealer next time the car is in, but it's one of those things where I know they'll act dumb (they're very good at that!).

ETA: Bit of Googling finds a thread where VW California (the van thing) owners are saying the same thing.  No conclusion though.

It all seems to depend on whether you have "Rear View" - the simple one like @Rgsmg53 and @Rory have or "Area View" with the wide angle setting.

My MY21 doesn't have Area View but the standard Rear View is brilliant!

Well, I have the simple system, but (now) have a wide angle view.

As a point of principle I never bet my life on things but I'm certain it wasn't that wide before - it was more like Berisford's first image. I mentioned about using the image to watch for people walking past the end of our drive and I recall that I really couldn't see much wider than the drive itself.  Now the view is much wider - you can nearly see the full width of my garden and there's no way it was like before.

My car was in the dealer this week for warranty work - turned out an electrical connection to one tone of my horn had fractured.

They checked and told me I have the latest firmware so I wonder if MY22 versus my MY21 vehicle makes the difference?

I agree about double checking, but I sure like starting from a rear view.

My Octavia regularly switched views, showing plate or not showing plate. Never got round to finding out why, but did have to frequently clean lens. Has only done it twice on the Karoq, which rarely needs the lens cleaning. I do find the left green kerb guide is about 2inches out, as always that far from kerb, when green guide is well on the kerb.

On mine I get just the top corners of the number plate shown along with the top of the bumper. This was this evening, the first time since this thread started although I had seen it previously. I don’t think it was visible earlier today, as I was looking at the display to assess if it was wide angle. It’s one of those things that once you see it you can’t miss it, but can’t be sure if it’s always shown. I have the impression when reversing out of the drive onto the road the view is wider angle than when reversing into a narrower space which is when I saw the number plate and bumper.

My rear camera, yesterday.

After never having a rear view camera until this last 2 months .....my experience is as follows.

Hitching up the caravan is now an absolute  dream !

Reverse parking is no better , but proximity to a rear wall / tree /bush etc is obviously improved. So while it doesn't help the manoeuvre as such , it's helpful.

I still use my wing mirrors and sight .....even though I've tried with the camera it's length of view and clarity isn't good enough and is distracting for me. I often can't see the parking lines as well as I can with my mirrors. Maybe it's just practise .....but I feel safer with the mirrors.

All said I do think it's a good feature.

No number plate displayed on mine , but for the percentage of screen this interferes with it wouldn't bother me.

It's visible in my 2023 Karoq👍

Thanks.  I'm still not 100% it wasn't always like that, but other people have reported it changing (and on other VW models too).  I prefer the wider view.

The image seems a bit jerky now when I'm reversing, it's not smooth.  So again, I do think it has changed.

Hopefully the jerkiness doesn't herald an upcoming failure🤞

My rear view definitely changed sometime in the past with any of the software updates of Amundsen infotainment. My MY21 Karoq intially had the view without seeing the number plate and switched to the view with the plate view.

I can't say for sure which view is now best, however I cannot switch the current view back or forth. Don't have area view with MY21, btw.

I have learnt today that there are two different cameras- low veiw is std reversing with single angle, high view was  multiple angles anx is fitted with park assist and area view functions.

Absolutely 👍 High view comes mostly with area view and as far as I know, in all Kodiaq models. So the basic low view has static lines while the high view cameras have adapting lines which change while steering.

I have the so called ‘high view’ with the options but I can’t get back to the original view - for a couple of weeks the standard rear view (before / without selecting any option) was a seemingly high definition, normal focal length, no number plate visible (perhaps just a smidge of bumper edge) nice rear view.

Then, as on my last Karoq, something changed, the default view is now wider with less definition………curious.

I think this could be a long running thread..... Today the reversing camera displayed an image which showed the whole of the number plate, I was taken by this view that I didn't pay any attention to whether it was low angle or narrow view! I pulled forward and selected reverse again and it was the more usual view with just the corners of the number plate showing. So my camera can show two different views as to what causes it, that still a work in progress!. The rear of the car was between two hedges. I have also noticed that there is a tiny bolt protruding from the side face of the camera next to the lens - could this be for adjusting the view?
