Boot and glove box lights.

Featured Replies

Hi all, a couple of questions for you. I replaced the luggage compartment light in my Roomster, it was a filament bulb and was kinda dim yellowish. I put in an led unit taken from a scrapped Fabia and it was noticeably brighter. The problem is it doesn't go out. On closing the boot, the light goes to maybe half brightness, not totally off. After the car being parked and locked, even a day later there's still a faint glow from the lamp. ??

Would a ballast resistor help in this case?

My glovebox lamp (filament type) also appears to be permanently on.

Any insights?

Cheers

The glovebox lamp is permanently on as there is no switch. It goes off when the ignition is turned off and after a few minutes. I checked it myself by leaving the glovebox open and locked the car. The lamp had extinguished after a few minutes.

Thanks for the reply. Cheers, there's no switch on mine either but I left the lamp hanging out to observe, switched off the car, locked it but an hour later the light was still on. Curious.

Am I right in thinking that the glovebox lamp (and the boot light) are under the control of some electronic module?

Just checked it. The boot light comes on when the boot lid is opened and off when closed. The glove box light goes off when the doors are locked.

Thanks for checking. Mine's similar, except that the boot light never seems to go fully off, at least when I  had the led unit in. There seems to be a residual low voltage on that circuit, just enough to dimly light an led lamp but not a filament bulb. Anyway, the old bulb's back in and all's well. Disconnected the glovebox lamp as after a few days of observation (keys out, doors locked) it was still on.

Cheers

Apologies for the late reply;  I no longer have my Roomster but still check here occasionally...

When I discovered my top glove box was hot, I removed the bulb.

A subsequent search here (on "glove box") turned up many posts on the subject, e.g.

(I didn't attempt to fix the switch;  the bulb was still removed when I sold the car at 160k+ miles...)

In fact, there is a switch for the glove box light. It's buried behind the fascia and requires an awful lot of major disassembly to access it. I had/have the same problem with my 2013 Roomster. This is a normally-closed switch which, when everything is as it should be, turns off when the glovebox lid is closed. However, on my car this switch has twice become detached from its mount so that means it turns on permanently. This is a real safety hazard which I reported to Skoda but they were very evasive and I never got any joy from them. The switch seems to be held in place by clips and can be dislodged if the car receives a sudden jolt, such as hitting a pothole. It should be retained far more securely so this cannot happen.

What is the big issue, you might wonder? I only became aware of the problem when I went to the car one day (after it hadn't been used for several days) and there was a strong smell of burning. Then I noticed smoke coming from the storage compartment above the glove box. We always keep a bundle of tissues in there and when I pulled them out the bottom of the pile was severely scorched. Another half hour or so and they would have been in flames. The bottom of this upper storage compartment had melted right through and the glove box lamp was glowing through the hole. It was only then that checks revealed the glove box light switch wasn't working.

The first time this happened I took it to the Skoda dealer and it took them nearly all day to fix it. The mechanic was not well pleased when I went to collect the car. Said it was a "right f'in b'std" of a job. A month later the same thing happened. They refused to repair it and just took the bulb out.
