7 Speed DSG - how is the manual shift feature supposed to work?

Featured Replies

I have a 2016 1.6 diesel with the 7 speed DSG.   The owners manual describes how the manual gear shift is supposed to work - but mine does'nt seem to behave like it says.    At standstill, if I push the auto-gear level to the left, it nicely engages 1st gear manually.  If I then push the level forward (as the + sign indicates) I would expect it to change into 2nd gear, but nothing happens.   If, whilst underway, I push the level to the left, it usually "manually" stays in that gear, but if I slow down or speed up (not a lot) it often changes gear itself - but I thought it was supposed to be in manual mode - why is it changing automatically?  I'm a bit puzzled - is there a proper explanation anywhere of how manual mode is supposed to work, or is there something wrong with my car?

Thanks for any advice,

Joe

In my experience if you switch to manual it will stay in the gear it is in, if you don't move it again. Except for going slower it will change down to protect itself (1). But when you then drive quicker it will go back up to where you set it

Therefore if it is stationary it will show 1 unless you move then you can select 2 and it won't change up any higher.

If you are moving and flick to manual it will show the gear it is in and you can change down or up etc. But if the car goes too slow for the gear it will change down, if you select a gear too low it will not change up but may limit the revs if it feels it feels it will cause damage.

The experience from  Ford,Seat and a Mercedes dsg boxes

(1)  The engine would stall, it's a computer controlled manual gearbox

I have a DQ381 DSG, and in "manual" mode it does retain a fair bit of autonomy.

It stops me shifting up a gear before it decides the RPM are high enough for it to shift up, despite it being perfectly happy to shift up at a lower RPM itself.

I've found it useful for pseudo-locking the car in a gear, but that's about it.

The logic for all VAG DSGs is the same in stock form.  In manual mode with the stick to the left it will still change up or down if you drive to fast or too slow for the current gear.  It just uses most of the rev range available from the engine.  For example it will change up through the gears if you keep your foot on the go pedal but the changes will be very high revs.  Likewise if braking in manual it will change gear down.

It will also only let you select 1st gear when stationary.  Some boxes will let you pull away in 2nd but that is on the wet clutch later boxes.  Not on the dry clutch one on the 1.6.

I've never experienced the upshift but that's probably because I don't thrash it hard enough. As stated by others, It will downshift as & when it decides its necessary.

I tried on the way home last night, took it up to about 4000rpm in 1st and then again in 2nd but no sign of an upshift. I wasn't keen on taking it any higher as it was only a couple of minutes after initial start-up and oil/water etc was still cold.

When in manual, the gearbox will change up at or about the rev limit.

Manual means only the driver changes gear except at the limits of the engine.

A DQ381 7 speed wet clutch or a Dq250 6 speed are lemons and pears different from the OP,s DQ200 DSG.     The DQ200 can be forced to change up in manual when put in 1st and not changed up.  Preservation. And be 6 speed not 7 speed in Sport.  As to manual request of a lower gear most ignore too low a gear.  Then with some DSG and a Diesel it might do that 3 gear down change and near put you through the windscreen.   No point comparing a 250 Nm or less petrol or diesel engine and a 2.0 TDI or TSI and their AUTOMATED manual gearbox.  (exception 2.0 TDI 115 ps have a DQ200 DSG)

Yes, a fair bit of truth in here. Putting it simply moving the lever to left, into manual plane, should keep the same gear and unless speed slow or exceeds certain normal margins, keeps your gear selection. If you just tap paddles, the gearbox takes back over in a matter of seconds. This is not the case in the manual plane.  All my experience is based on the DQ250 on a standard map.  TCU remaps usually alter behaviour.
