Auto emergency stop for no reason?

Featured Replies

Hi there, 2 mins after leaving the drive this morning, on a 20mph road the car for absolutely no reason decided to emergency stop, with the audible alarm and red message on dash, slam on brakes with seat belt tensioners tightening. About 1 min before that an amber collision warning came up very briefly. My 12yr old daughter was in the car to, and she confirmed there was absolutely nothing on the road. Nothing came at us from the side as there were no give ways to the side...... seriously WTF.... is it a leaf or something on the sensor that caused this? 74 plate SE L Kodiaq, 1.5 Tsi etec. • Yes. You drive according to the capabilities of your vehicle and the conditions. One factor is braking performance, but that is only one of many.

  • Perhaps a controversial opinion, but I think people now have far too much faith in their cars. They’ve never experienced a proper accident or felt the car lose control. Certainly, if they had, they wo

Best you check if the sensitivity can be reduced.

I have seen others say it no longer can, but surely it must be and there are not going to be years more of people posting about similar things happening but now with the latest models from Skoda.

'Vorsprung Durch Technik' seems to have past the VW Group by.

  • 1 month later...

Had the same earlier this week. There was a car crossing on a crossroad (both turning left), but we wouldn't have touched.

Car slammed the brake, and i was rear ended, resulting in a lot of damage.

Crikey, hope all OK involved. Have you told Skoda? If so is there any advice or remedial action?

Busy working with the insurance... Just had the car for four days, so not everything fully registered.

Everyone ok, but this was totally unneccesary.

Only thing is; i cannot prove it.

If someone died or had life changing injuries the Police or Insurance Loss Adjusters would have the ECU from the car investigated and it would tell if you braked or the car auto-braked.

People have been reporting the issue for years now and saying how dangerous the Braking when not required, Faults / over sensitive.

They have just been luckyno accident / injuries / deaths.

So really. Corporate Responsibility VW Group / Skoda Netherlands should be investigating your car.

Have the Design / Engineering / Manufacturing / Material / Software faults.

Report it to your Vehicle Safety Agency in the Netherlands.

Have the Insurers / Brokers do their job.  Tell them of the fundamental faults with VW Group vehicles software.  They should know. They are insurers...

Hi Mikey, surely as the other poster intimates it could be downloaded from the ECU, event log. It is worrying.

My girlfriend's Ibiza (2022, 1.0 FR) has slammed on the brakes once or twice for pretty much no reason. She was quite hesitant afterwards to drive the car.

I then had a 2023 Golf courtesy car last year, and found it was dangerous - I was driving round a traffic island and it slammed the brakes on. Sure, there was a parked car - ten meters in front... I smacked my face pretty hard on the steering wheel (great job seatbelt), and the Uber behind me touched the bumper.

@MikeyMan If Skoda can see how many times I've used launch control, they must be able to see when the braking has kicked in?

I also wonder the implications it has for insurance/liability. For instance, if I'm driving on the motorway and the systems kicks in, say due to a crash ahead - what about the car behind me? It's fine if it's Tony in his 2024 330e, but what about Brian in his 2004 Yaris? Even if he brakes before my Octavia's computer does, there's no way he's outbraking my vRS on DS2500's. He'd be liable as he's hit me from behind, but he physically couldn't have stopped...

I agree, but is it really fair to base stopping distances/liability based on braking performance? If so, then a GT3RS could sit on the bumper of cars, whilst fully laden Transit vans would need several truck lengths!

I have also noticed my mk2 is considerably more likely to warn than any of my mk1s were and it has slapped on once.

If it's thinking you're about to crash there's no point in tickling the brake I suppose.

Something most people should read…

It’s always the knackered 2005 Polo in the outside lane.

I have tried to explain this to my wife, but apparently it doesn't apply if it's raining because then the roads are wet and there's "nothing" you can do to prevent an accident. 🙄

On my Octavia, I think there are 3 settings for sensitivity.

You can even switch it off, but then you get a warning light.

From memory, if you do this, you also lose ACC/Lane Assist,

Every other time when I exit a Eurotunnel train and forget to switch off front assist in my 2016 mk3 vRS Octavia, as soon as I am close to the exit turn, the car slams on the brakes to the point of the engine being cut out.

So far, luckily no one hit me, but it is not a pleasant experience. The speed is about 5-10mph, there is more than enough thinking/braking distance (you make a sharp turn left or right just before shuttle carriage end wall), but the car knows better... I think not.

I have had the (false) collision warning come up every now and then on multiple lane roads, often when there are HGVs in adjacent lane, moving slower. Thankfully, no emergency stops on the road at speed yet.

Having observed the seemingly unstoppable transition of VW  Group car designs from rugged, reliable long distance runner to flimsy, fidgety multimedia circus on wheels for the past 20 years, I only keep asking myself why do people not vote with their wallets against this nonsense of putting inadequately tested "safety" systems, failing security measures (local car thefts 50% up, the increase is mainly kessy/wireless key cars).

False sense of security because of having an inadequately performing system is in my opinion worse than not having the system on the car at all (and not overpaying for it when buying a new car). Just my 2 cents.

I think because everyone is the same! Certainly, no BMW or Merc is any better (in my experience)

That may well be, but if all the lemmings are marching towards the cliff, it does not make it better...

Ignoring the stupid touch screens, etc, I think the safety features are brilliant. I’m thankful it’s now law to have front assist and I think many lives will be saved by it.

But there is a caveat. IMO, too many of these cars try to be too clever for their own good. Stuff like the TSR tech with ACC - I’ve found it absolutely dangerous, reading the 30mph Cobham services sign while I’m in the middle lane doing 70.

These cars aren’t Tesla’s, they aren’t smart enough and I think that’s the issue.

Yes totally agree with this.... i was on the M6 and car started putting on the brakes really heavy as it thought it had seen a 30mph when I was doing a 70mph

Very true, there is nothing you can do to prevent an accident. Hence, the Police now call them road traffic COLLISIONS.

There is lots you can do to reduce the chance of an accident. Drive with due care and attention.

Sadly there are Safety Systems now in vehicles that should not be on the roads as there are fundamental faults.

But VW Group like to sell them anyway and then the Owners / Drivers have to wait for VW group to eventually resolve the issues.

Occasionally the owner / keeper gets the vehicles back to them as unsafe and they get a courtesy car.

Some have been Rejecting the cars.  That includes 2024 Skoda Kodiak,s.

I absolutely didn't even touch the brake. Was already steering my way out of the situation. The oncomer was taking more room then he should.

But that's the thing, is very difficult to prove if the action was really unnecessary. Probably at some point there was a situation where if I wouldn't have steered we could have collided. So in that sense it might have been appropriate.

It was an unexpected and in my opinion unnecessary brake action, at the same time, the lady behind didn't leave enough space, had her reading glasses on and expressed herself she wasn't able to walk very well. Did she brake? Is so, could she apply enough force to even come to a halt...

The challenge here is that I could shift all attention to Skoda NL, but that might pose the risk that I'm jeopardizing the handling of my damage. I feel quite bad about the whole thing to be honest.
