Gearbox in emergency mode

Featured Replies

Hi all,

67 plate DSG7.
Gpot to about 200 yards of being home and “gearbox in emergency mode: no reverse gear” flashed up, and at the same time “oil change service in 1200 miles”.

Only appeared to have 1st gear, wouldn’t shift up but with only a short distance to home, it probably wouldn’t have gone above 2nd anyway.

Switched off and left for 5 mins, switched back on and all ok again, with only the “service” message staying.  A bit strange how both messages came on at the exact same time.

Anyone had similar? Praying it’s just a glitch, but not confident for driving it too far now!

Thanks

What engine, & how many miles?

A 2.0 TSI or TDI, so a DQ381 7 Speed Wet Clutch, now common issues / faults reported lots & growing.

Or is it a DQ200 DSG 7 speed Twin dry clutch DSG?

2.0 TDI, 110k miles. DSG service at 80k. Never had an issue with gears shifting, always been smooth.

I'm really not seeing these reports of DQ381 problems, and the gearbox guy I spoke to (who services them) said they're pretty bulletproof, so long as the oil changes are observed, ideally a bit earlier than the 80K miles recommended.

You really are not looking.

The issue is global, hence those businesses specialising in MCU repairs, diagnostics etc.

They are failing long before any Oil & Filter change at 80,000 miles.

Is the guy servicing them at a VW Group main dealership or an Independent or Automatic Specialist.

People do come to forums and social media with faults an maybe very small percentages of the product.

The DQ381 issues are going to be geater than the DQ200 ones ever were,

Great if there are only very few, or they happen within the manufactures warranty, but they are happening to those with 3-7 year old cars now,

and under 80,000 miles.

Not all are getting a new filter when they are serviced, but that is not the same as a bad MCU, fundamental, design, manufacturing or materials.

I had this on my Octavia scout tdi fitted with the dq381. Needed a new MCU thankfully under warranty. The car was 4 years old and had covered 49,000 miles

Thanks guys.

Just been out in it and got it up to temp. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

Bloody cars!

What box is in the 2.0 tdi 2023 ?

Are these also having issues ?

A DQ381. Some are having issues.

Maybe only 1 or 2% of the tens of thousands produced, but even then VW / Skoda know how many and should be open and honest if there are known issues.

If they say a 80,000 mile Oil change service regime then why not put the warranty to 80,000 miles / 8 years on the DSG?

Still driving since then, without errors. Tomorrow will do 500km trip and report.

Done around 5000km since August when error randomly appeared.

The error came up once and hasn’t come back since?

Hit it few times that day until battery changed during the trip because was dead. Might be faulty mechatronic since it's well known problem, easly.

Without problems.

Update! Error is back! Time to repair mechatronic unit, one day went without problems today after 10 min of driving error came back, luckly I came home safe with manual changing..

Thanks for the update.

I have done around 500 miles since the error came up, only happened once.

I’ll keep this thread updated!

Im sure you will need unit or repair yours soon or later. It is well known problem and we are affected...

I've had two cars with the DQ381 transmission, and the mechatronic unit went bad on both at around 100tkms. Makes me wonder if this is more common than 1-2%?

Anyone else thoughts on this?

Now I kinda want a manual transmission instead.

It is getting really quite common, but @EnterName is not seeing these reports and the Technician / Mechanic 'Gearbox' guy he spoke to says they are pretty bulletproff.

VW Group know the failure rate while in warranty, must have a good idea of the reports of failures out of warranty.

So like the DQ200 DSG issue, it needs someone or people / class action to be taking a court action, or maybe an Australian Regulatory body to take them and then a Senior VW Executive can be asked in court the actual numbers / statistics of premature failures.

That happened in Scotland where a Civil Action was started against VW Group / Skoda UK actually over a DQ200 DSG.

They did not go to court, did not defend them selves because that would have meant revealing the number of failures.

Same with 1.4 TSI / TFSI 1320136 PS  Twincharger Engines.   They just replaced engines, paid costs and had a Confidentiality Agreement signed.

Is DQ250 mechatronic less frequent to fail compared to the DQ381? What about the DQ500?

I have only seen 2 members post on here abut failures of DQ500,s while the threads have been about DQ381 MCU,s.

UPDATE:

After nearly a week and approx 750 miles, the fault is back.

Gearbox in emergency mode.
Lost all even gears.

Booked in with the local VAG specialist.

After turning engine off and back on, it’s like nothing ever happened again, hope they find something!

Had the exact same fault. Mechatronic was bad. If you have to pay for it yourself, I would concider third party repair specialists as they appear cheaper than new unit.

Had this issue a couple of weeks ago with my dq500, used a company in glasgow to replace metatronic unit, however it had also affected tge gearbox & clutch as well while failing so cost a pretty penny, but glad i didnt have to pay a dealer. good luck with yours

Yes.

The mechatronic unit are the weak link. Timely servicing is key, way before the 80K interval.

If, as you seem to predict, my DQ381 fails disastrously at some point, I look forward to your (much deserved) "I TOLD YOU SO!" about my failed gearbox.

If it doesn't fail by the time I sell the car, and I'm 4 years into my ownership now and anticipate to keep the car 20 years, then I reserve the right to put forth my point of view that the DQ381 is a robust and reliable gearbox, if looked after.
