Ultimate Speed 5A charger with voltmeter. Model ULGD 5.0 C1

Battery came from 70% SOC with following smart charger input

charger 13.3V @ 1653

charger 13.5V @ 1800 4 Bars indication

charger 14.4V @ 1945 4 bars indication

Voltage then fell to 13.5V with a trickle charge of ~ 0.8A, charger then disconnected, VCDS then showed 84% SOC but don't know if I had left the charger "trickling away" for hours on end if the SOC would have risen to 100%.

The usable battery charge was/is allegedy 27AH so lots of starts hopefully left at ~ 0.25AH/start.

  • I would add brake pedal pressure also influences stop/start, if, as some drivers do, slightly reducing brake pedal pressure a split second before the car stops, the S/S might not kick in, also if Auto

  • I believe that you will find that the parameters governing operation of automatic idle stop (stop start) have not significantly changed since it was first introduced.

In case battery issues were behind all the glitches with our manual mc I bought a ctek charger. It hasn't made any difference. Start-stop works when it wants to and generally not for very long. It's stopped a few times and not wanted to restart in very difficult situations in traffic. Not completely sure if that's stop or stall if you follow.

I asked the dealer to look the battery over at the last service. They say that it's fine. It looks to me that the car is equipped with inadequate electronics and software. Maybe some duff chips entered the supply chain when there was a prolonged shortage a few years back.

Others will know better than me but I've read or heard that car manufacturers generally don't use cutting-edge chips but older cheaper ones and during covid they had trouble getting chips because they paid so far behind with them that priority was given to those that paid sooner and for higher value more profit chip buyers. IIRC Toyota were getting chips because they paid the chip providers sooner or had more in their stock or both. During covid VWŠkoda downgraded stuff as owners seemed to report.

Of course that should all be settled now, and again others would know better than me but IIRC VW got shot of their in-house programmers and had others then found this caused issues / even more issues so after a while employed in-house again.

Who knows what programs they have in what models over the years, in my wife's 2015 Mk3 Fabia when we allow it the stop/start works very well but we don't have DSG or 3-cylinder or stuff that's on a 2023/4/5 car (thank gawd).

@fabiamk4man sorry I tried to find the thread/posts on this issue I know are elsewhere but couldn't, I used to be, on and off, pretty good at internet searches but for a while now I'm a lot less successful.

It's not the end of the world, but `I find it strange that after selectinn neutral and applying the hand brake that there isn't a software interlock that allows the engine to stay stop. Afterall you should then be able to apply the footbrake to move the gear selector and that should restart the engine.

I think I will contact Skoda and ask the question.
