To fold or not to fold - that is the question

Featured Replies

A question for Karoq owners who reside in areas with regular winter snow and sharp frosts. The door mirrors on my Karoq are set to fold on locking. Not had a car with folding mirrors before and it sits outside at night. So twice this week  I unlock the car and there is a 'crack' as the mirror motors break the ice as they unfold. The doors are frozen to the rubbers, and the windows are frozen to the runners. The doors can be freed with a gentle tap round the  edges, the windows I can leave shut till the car warms up but the mirrors have to unfold when unlocking. What do owners in colder climates do?  Do you leave the mirrors unfolded  so as to remove any possibility of damaging the unfold mechanism?

You can set them not to fold etc in Settings. I'd be doing that if mine were freezing up.

I tend to disable the folding when freezing temperatures are expected.

Different car, but I only fold mine when I really want or feel the need to ...... ie public car park.

It annoys me that if I return to the car and unlock it, the mirrors automatically open.

I might just be putting something in the boot or getting something that I may have forgotten to get.

If the manufacturers programmed them to open only when the car or engine is switched on, it would be much better implemented IMO.

Not sure how the ones in yours are set to open?

But I agree with what @sussamb says

AND @thamestrader I would be treating my door seals to a good clean (if necessary) but definitely a spray of silicone or similar treatment, to stop them sticking.

(I think silicone is the right stuff to use iirc)

If you have the 3 button key fob, pressing the middle button unlocks trunk/boot without unfolding the mirrors.

The wiring flexing when freezing cold can't be a good thing.   I disabled auto-folding on ours, but it's parked out of the way on drive, I suppose it'd be a nuisance to remember if you want them folded in routinely.

A fair point - but if you think about it, wiring connected to any door flexes every time it is opened, regardless of mirror position.

In case that was for me ...

Mine has 4 buttons (ooh, get you, Lol) but the boot button unlocks the boot and the drivers door ......

The manufacturers obviously assume you are going to drive away once you have put something in the boot.

I would prefer it to just unlock the boot but it is factory set to unlock both.

Really? We can unlock the boot without the drivers door unlocking, but it's an 18 plate. Maybe Skoda have changed the way it works.

I've never seen a 4 button key fob for a Skoda or a VW either?

When I had a Kia Venga (nicknamed Arsen!), the only way to close mirrors was to press a button on inside of door, before opening. This meant you couldn’t check for traffic behind, so I usually left them open.

I don't have mine fold in each time I lock the car. Don't really see the necessity, it'll probably be less wear and tear on the motors too and just fold them on the turn knob on the door card when you need to.

Good point about freezing weather may affect the motors.

Same on my Golf - the Superb almost needn't bother, they stick out almost as far when folded.

That said, I like the folding mirrors on the Karoq, at a glance I can see it's locked - as I've got older I often can't remember - did I or didn't I....?

The flashing red LED is poor on VWG vehicles - from a distance it's hard to see and my security cameras don't pick em up - yet my neighbours BMW with its central dash top LED lights up like a beacon.

I’m another who’s been disabling auto-fold for many years.

Primarily to avoid unnecessary wear and tear.  I can’t imagine the mirror mechanism is built to last the life of the vehicle if they’re folding in and out a few times a day. Frozen mechanism is another worry.

I occasionally function test them, either for fun or when parking on a busy road.

A family member lives on a wide busy road and unfortunately their baby Kia Picanto recently had the driver door mirror whacked by a passing vehicle.  £240 for a new mirror. 5 minutes to fit it.

You don't have to have, or be referring to a Skoda or a VW to post a reply on this forum..............

I did say "Different car" with the first two words I said............ (I was referring to the 1 series, and it is a uk spec thing, I think.)

But I did have the Octavia for almost 14 years .......... :)

My MY22 does the same as yours.  i.e. the doors don't open if I just do the boot button
