Does On Board SIM Card Use 3G (The 3G Network is Being Shutdown Across Europe)?

the network that Skoda (Probably the whole VAG range) use in the UK are Vodafone........ And they turned their 2G/3G networks off last summer in the UK.

Not in my area, 2G Vodafone is still active (and is planned to be until at least 2030) but 3G Vodafone was turned off last summer - making it impossible to open the Lidl Plus app in-store as there is no 4G coverage yet! And there's no planned date for 5G rollout in my area.

Made me very puzzled when I read in IET News last spring that research into 6G has already started, as an IET Member I had a letter published the next month suggesting that instead of spending on 6G research they should be spending on 4G/5G rollout to get rid of the newly created not spots by turning off 3G!

According to Ofcom, here in the UK some providers have already turned off their 3G networks, others scheduled to do so by early 2025. Also, they plan to cease 2G services by 2033 but as yet no planned

  • Mine is a 2023 and I get the same message even though all mk4 have atleast 2 LTE antennas

Not sure it is exclusively Vodafone - my Mk4 has had a perfectly viable internet connection (satnav) in areas where my mobile (on Vodafone) had none.

SIM cards and eSIMs are available that support roaming between UK networks not just when abroad.

I’ve always gone on the point that the data supplier VAG use (Cubic Telecom) piggy back on the Vodafone network in the UK but they may have a backup agreement to roam onto another UK network as/when required.

Just prolonged my care connect, had no notifications that it is going to stop working in 2026. It was only cheaper for some reason. My car is early 2020. Who knows, Skoda may throw out a surprise later still.

I paid the service for 1 year as well but on the app on the mobile phone it says activate, when I log in to my cubic account it says paid until 2026 , how can I activate this ??

when I open the app it doesnt work, needs activation even now that I paid, how can it be like this ? any idea ??

thanks

Are you set up as a main user in the car? The process that involves two keys.

yes, sure, I used it the first year for free, did the payment for the second year, it doesn't work, even I deleted the user and re-created it and activated with 2 keys, still the same, now i am deleting the app and reinstall it 😞

Also, you'll need a subscription to Škoda Connect services - https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/skoda-connect (or the equivalent for your nation)

When I set mine up (nearly four years ago) I had to get my Škoda ID account verified by a dealer before I could do anything like see the vehicle location etc. even though I was the Main User in the car. By "verified" I mean that the Dealer had to confirm to the Škoda system that I was the legal owner of the car, and thus had the rights to see all the car details and information through the app. I assume (but don't know) it is still the same.

No that is no longer required. I had to do it with my first Octavia in 2021, but last year I didn't have to do it with its replacement.

last year I did the first setup myself, it was easy enough, the second year seems a lot difficult 😞

You're showing us screens for the Skoda Connect but then the data package purchase not for Skoda Connect purchase which are two totally separate services.

Skoda Connect gives you the services in the first image...... The data packages service just means you buy data so that you can use your car as a wi-fi hotspot for passengers in the car whilst on journeys. Which one have you actually purchased?

Not an issue for us mk4 owners but what they say about the 2G/3G is only partially correct. The UK networks as a whole will all turn off their 2G/3G networks by 2030 but the network that Skoda (Probably the whole VAG range) use in the UK are Vodafone........ And they turned their 2G/3G* networks off last summer in the UK.

I think you knew what you meant*, but just to clarify, 2G will be around for a good number of years yet but this only serves for basic calls and texts, nothing more.

3G in the UK has now fully gone, I believe.

I use 2G for calls rather than 4G as I get a full signal with 2G whereas only a very low signal on 4G and a tendency to drop if I move further into the house. I do live right on the outskirts though.

And 4G gives me a better dBm figure than LTE gives me.

I purchased as on picture, 1 year of subscription, this should be data plan for the car esim, my mobile has its own data plan so they should communicate together, right ?

maybe this means they dont offer the service of app connection anymore , just wifi hotspot ??

If you want control car features from the app, you need to buy Care Connect - Remote Access. Your car does not need a data plan for that, those are two different services.

This is what you need from skoda-connect.com:

Apologies if I am misunderstanding this but have you paid for a subscription to Skoda Connect - this subscription will give you information on driving data, car locking, where your car is parked, lights and horn activation etc.  The screen grabs suggest you have only purchased a data plan for your onboard SIM which is a completely different thing and is not generally required.  All I pay for is Skoda Connect which gives me remote access to the information detailed above on the MySkoda app on my phone.  Again, sorry if I have misunderstood your problem.

where can I pay for Skoda connect ? on my account it says only redeem code and therefore I should find a code to redeem there , at the dealer they dont know about it, they said you should pay cubic telecom

on the car it says "Conclude a Skoda Connect contract to activate "

my question is how can I do it ?

:)

It may be different in your territory but via the MySkoda App you just navigate to "Profile" and then you can purchase via the "Paid Services" - it sounds like the setup is different for you.  Can you raise an inquiry with Skoda using the App, emphasise that the dealer has not been able to assist you?

How long ago - my experience is they can be a bit slow in responding

It does sound like your Skoda dealership should be able to provide renewal codes so perhaps you need to push a bit harder with them:

https://availability.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com#/service/76

asked skoda about this link, they said it is old way and dont work anymore

I wrote and called a lot of skoda, cubic, shops, and no one is telling me the solution, very bad service !!!
