Tyre check indicator

Thank you for your very detailed response. My initial thought was the possibility of the tyre that wasn't changed causing the light to come on so I did try changing it as the trye shop agreed to try it and refund if it didn't work which it turned out not to.

I'm taking it to another garage this afternoon to see if they can shed any light.

As has been said, the TPMS works by analysing the data from the 4 ABS wheel speed sensors built into the wheel hubs. It is looking for very slight differences (or actually a change in the differences) in wheel speeds over a longish period (probably 17 miles!) since it musn't instantly react to relative wheel speed changes eg caused by going round a roundabout.

Your error message was "Tire Check indicator / Wheel loose detection - Data implausible" which to me points to one of the ABS wheel sensors being slightly intermittent or otherwise marginally faulty. Not enough to upset the ABS or the ACC, but enough to throw the TPMS over a longish period.

Thank you for that. Yes it is looking more than likely abs wheel sensors, trouble is finding out which one as every garage that has plugged it in so far hasn't been able to get any specific information. Just that generic code. I'm not sure in skodas computer might be better placed pinpoint the precise wheel?

@JK7  Good that you have replies to people with so much information.

Maybe an idea from the start to actually say what your Superb 2017 is and then people might give some thought to it having ACC.  Not all do.

An overheating brake or bearing making the tyre increase in circumference is a difficult one to diagnose.

The way to do is in the simplest way, stop ASAP when safe and feel for a hotter wheel / hub area or use a digital thermometer.

With cars with the system that shows pressure and heat of the different wheels / tyres you easily see when there is a simply issue like Brakes / Bearing.

Thank you, I will try that. My car was in for a service and the rear shocks changed two days ago and the mechanic ran a live diagnostic whilst taking for a drive and gave me a print out of the graph which he said there didn't appear to be any anomalies with any of the wheels. He checked the wheel bearings too and said they appeared to fine.

I believe you said it was the front left which shows the error?

is this the one with the odd tyre?

You can always move the wheel from front left to rear left and see if the issue follows

I'm sure that I've read that VW Group have had some issues that they resolved by a S/W update - maybe press your Skoda dealership to check for that, or for them to log a request for technical help from Skoda mothership.

I can't say which controller needed the S/W update so I'll not guess as logic sometimes does not work.

No it was a rear tyre that wasn't replaced originally but I have since tried replacing with a new one, same brand and light still came on. The issue is it doesn't tell me where the error comes from only the tyre pressure indicator light comes on and the display shows all lit up.

Okay so next up either get something like vcds, obd11 quite pricey, find someone on here who has vcds or take your car to a VAG specialist (most likely will use vcds anyway).

The problem taking it to a non specialist garage is they’ll most likely use generic code readers, but you’ll need to make a point that it seems to come on after 17 miles.

This is why buying vcds yourself will be better because you can do all the logging yourself, but tbh I wouldn’t know exactly what live data you’ll need to log but I guess they’ll be one for abs sensors

The Vehicle Status screen should tell u which tyre is bad.

At least mine used to.

I've had a slow puncture in the past and it actually told me which tyre it was but now it just shows them all light up and says the low pressure indicator.

Oddly mine now does the same. I still have the slow puncture and the system did, until recently, identify which tyre was deflating. For some reason now it just gives a generic warning without being specific as to which tyre is causing the fault.

I noticed as well that if all the tyres deflate at a similar rate, the system won't pick up any problem.

Yes, the final sentence is what is to be expected from this system as it is looking for changes/differences between the values/ratios when last reset to what they are now - ie as probably said already in this thread and others, this system is an indirect tyre pressure monitoring system and so is not actually able to measure tyre pressures - only the frequency of each wheel rotation.

**Update** I brought the car to another mechanic on Friday, he disconnected the battery and left for a few minutes. He cleared faults and told me to try that. I have now driven 120 miles over the weekend and alas the light hasn't come back on (well over my 17 miles it usually took)

Fingers crossed this it sorted, just thought I'd post here so if anyone else has encountered anything similar it's worth a try.

This is one of the two main (basic) solutions with electronic systems:

1. Check the cable

2. Reboot the system

😄

Oh result, clearing the code in code readers should have sufficed though.

BTW is your car still on original battery? If so might be time to replace in the near future

  • Author

Yea I would have thought that myself. It had been cleared by a few different garages probably about 3 or 4 times. Yes it is the original battery, I was actually just talking to someone yesterday that said I will probably look to replace the battery soon as it's coming up on 8 years old, though bar this tyre indicator light has never missed a beat.

Might (or might not) be the first of a series of gremlins on the horizon. 8 years is a good innings though.

8 years is a very good duration. I don't know if your car "sleeps" in a garage, but it helps a lot in winter...

My Mk3 sleeps outside and I changed it preventively after 6 years, just before winter...
