Old bottle of unused engine oil

Featured Replies

In my car was a 1little bottle of unopened engine oil, manufactured 2 weeks after the car got its first owner.

So my question is, since its this old (2013) what can i use it for?

Can i still use it in the engine if it needs a topup? Or in a generator or chainsaw maybe?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

You could treat a fence panel with it, maybe.

Watch out for contaminating the soil, mind.

Depends on your exact model of car and what engine you have , some use 10/40 some use this type 5/30 and some use 0/20 as lomg as it's the correct oil for your car you can use this for topping up or adding to an oil change oil does not "go off " if kept in tidy conditions

Humm, if in doubt get rid of it.

I might play that game with my motor mower, but never with my cars, I use the contents of my “top up” the next service and refill with new oil, while the “oil” will last a long time, it has been said, the additives will not - so I’ve taken that on board rather than taking my chances.

I use any odd oil in an old fashioned oil can for lubricating nuts and bolts etc. You can also mix with petrol or kerosene and use as a releasol. I have one of those pump up 1 liter sprayers.

Additives will not know or care that the bottle has been opened and some of the contents used, exposure to engine heat, mechanical shear and combustion gases is a different matter.

It'll be just fine for topping up, oil doesn't separate into anything, it stays as oil for millions of years before we dig it out of the ground.

Crude oil is refined and Synthetic oil is produced from a high quality base oil.

Lovely if you can just take it out of the ground ready to use.
