Boot Lid Doesn’t Open Smoothly: is this normal?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I’ve been the owner of a Skoda Scala for four years now. I’ve never been particularly thrilled with the force required to open the boot, but I’ve managed to live with it. However, after all these years, it now feels quite odd that, halfway through opening, I still have to push it up manually to fully open the hatch.

With my previous cars, I never had this issue - lifting it about 30 centimetres was enough for it to open on its own.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m asking other owners.

Thanks!

There's only a few things that can stop the boot from opening well, some sort of tightntness in the hinges and faulty/tired struts. Usually the struts can get tired after years of use but it sounds like yours were never very good to begin with so I would make sure the hinges are lubricated and maybe replace the struts.

Have you had the car from new? never had a rear end shunt that could have damaged/misaligned the hinges?

I bought a compatible replacement, but it didn’t make much of a difference. The boot lid lifted faster, but with too much force - so much so that it bounced at the top. I ended up returning them and reinstalling the original ones.

I bought the car with less than 80 km on the clock and not even six months old, so it was practically new. However, I’ve never lubricated the struts. It might make sense to do so, but to me, the issue seems more fundamental.

I used to have a Fiat Punto years ago, and with that, I only had to lift the boot slightly, and it would shoot up effortlessly on its own.

A compatible replacement could have been set up for much heavier boot lids hence the violence.

I recently replaced the struts on my toolbox lid and they were way too strong, in fact I couldn't shut the lid at all as the brackets were bending. In my case and in a lot of cases, universal struts have a grub screw where you can vent out the nitrogen until you get the balance right.

Maybe the design is not ideal and if so, there is probably no solution as i'm sure you have worked out. Hopefully the wave of people moaning about their Scala boot lids will come along soon to make you feel better 😁

Same problem after 5 years, but I started to notice it some 1,5 years back. Now it`s becoming worse. Have to open the boot all way to the top. At least it doesnt fall down, but stays in place when lifted.

Same thing for me. However, I was reading on a forum in my country that many people have this issue with the Scala. It seems to stem from a design flaw in the bonnet.
