Noisy engine after injector replaced

Featured Replies

Hi all,

This is my first post, so I'm hope I'm in the right place ☺️

Recently bought a 2010 1.6tdi CR and last week broke down and got towed home due to injector number 4 going.

Had the injector now replaced, but now the engine doesn't sound right when cold for like the first 15 mins or so.

Lumpy when revving and then fast tapping noise when accelerating in gear. Like I say, it settles down after a bit.

Mechanic said he coded the new injector, replaced the copper seal, but something is definitely not quite right.

Any ideas?

Many thanks 👍

What does the mechanic say?

Maybe more injectors are on the way out?

What were the symptoms when it "broke down".

Maybe something else was also wrong

Does the fast tapping sound a bit like you used to get on a petrol engine if it was pinking?

Thanks for the replies,

The mechanic seems to think the fast knocking/tapping noise is because the oil is too thin, and a thicker oil would help. Although it's always been serviced at Skoda.

The car was running perfectly beforehand, then injector just went kne day out the blue.

The new noise also only happened once the Injector was replaced. The odds of it being something to do with the oil when the noise wasn't there before I'd imagine is quite low.

He doesn't have vcds, just a generic system, and according to this video, sometimes you have to reset the minimum deviation quantities? Especially on a reconditioned injector.

I'm not sure about the pinking noise, I can only describe it as rough running at idle and the fast tapping when accelerating....

This is the video, that explains it but I'm not sure if anyone else has had this?

Thanks guys

If the oil is the correct grade Mine is 5w30 507.00 it should be fine. Thicker oil isn't a good idea at all. If the only thing that was replaced was the injector then I reckon pretty sure it  has something to do with it if there was no noise before it failed. I have a couple of bad glowplugs on mine but engine is only lumpy for 10-15secs then fine. It may need VCDS to correctly code rather than a generic scanner  but I am not sure. Another long shot would be a break/fault in wiring loom or connector  thats only causing fault when cold? There should be a calibration value on the side of the injector that has to be inputed into car to stop over/under fueling. I would ask him if he actually inputed the value or just told the ecu it had a new injector or just cleared codes

After my final two injectors were changed I had the pinking noise (diesel knock) under high torque acceleration. The specialist garage said that they had used the numbers with the injectors to code them to the ecu and not to worry. I was reluctant to accept there was no problem but in fact the pinking did not reoccur. The power also increased as time went on so I guess the ecu probably makes small adjustments.

However, you may like to to look at this video which diagnoses and fixes a CAYC engine with poor idle and a ticking noise.

One of the new injectors was not performing correctly and was replaced/repaired. This may be your problem.

Ah thanks guys, that's all really helpful. Good video too 👍 I've spoken to someone who has dealt with this before and he's going to adjust the injectors deviation quantities with vcds....so here's hoping!!😅
