0-60

Featured Replies

May be a stooopid question, but whose done a few 0-60 timings and what did you get? I just did 5 runs and managed an overall average of 6.6. I was well impressed. My son was timing, but I trust him.

Reason behind this, is that I was asked to test run a mates ST3 as he can't get anywhere near the quoted figures. It did, but it doesn't now, a problem me thinks. We're waiting to try it out on a rolling road.

That's about as accurate as measuring a foot using your own foot.

was 60 read from the speedo ??? it's out a little ;)

But what if your foot is infact.... a foot

Fully appreciate that, hence the numerous runs and average time. Unfortunately most of us don't have access to pucker test gear. :P

Whatever, it was quick.

Then you have bloody big feet.

With any luck my 2.0TDI hatch will arrive tomorrow, so after a 'suitable' bit of running in, I'll try some runs with the G-tech meter on board. Still not pro timing gear, but better than a stop watch and eyeballing the speedo :)

Will also see how well calibrated the speedo is against a Garmin GPS & TomTom.

Actually maybe some testing before & after running in would provide an interesting comparison...

My foot is 11" :(:(

I think this is the key - even averaging over 5 or 6 runs, if your not getting up to 60mph then the test is flawed :D

We can compre notes then. Here are my findings.

BTW I found the digital speed reading I get from the climate control diagnostics is spot on with my SatNav.

An interesting read. I didn't believe the figures we posted last night to be that accurate, but I was impressed overall at how easy it seemed to want to get there and how close to the official figure it was. I think we will be giving it another go soon, just for the sheer hell of it, I mean that's what having a RS is all about, isn't it :D

The figure you stated is 6.6 seconds and that's notably quicker than the official figure of 7.3 seconds that Skoda have in their technical specification i.e not close.

Auto Express measured a 6.6 second time for the Octavia vRS which was the same as the Golf GTi but strangely enough they couldn't get their Focus ST to do better than 7.2 seconds when it's specified to do it in 6.5 seconds.

I managed to time my Mondeo TDCi at around 8.8 to a real 60mph, but that felt much quicker off the mark, although the Octy has better mid-range. My guess is it might be similar but no way quicker by any margin.

Seems strange (daft) measuring to 1/100th of a second as there's no way either the speedo or the button pressing could be anything like as accurate.

The best way to measure 0-60 is to calibrate the speedo with GPS - work out exactly where on the speedo corresponds to 60.

Film the run with a half decent video camera (not a mobile phone), make sure the camera is pointing directly at the speedo to eliminate parallax errors.

Time the run from the video playback.

Agreed, nigh on impossible to get an accurate reading with a stopwatch in conjunction with the speedo.

At this years Trax will be a 0-60 timing run (which will be far more accurate than the above method), a few will no doubt have a go and post up the results.

Finally, this performance calculator was posted up recently and although possibly flawed produces believable figures.

When i timed my runs i stopped the stopwatch bang on seeing the needle pass 60. My satnav says the car is doing 58 when the speedo reads 60 so taking response time into account, i'm fairly confident my results where resonably accurate. I've since tried a run or 2 using the digital speed reading from the climate diagnostics and acheived similar times.

There'll be all sorts of variables. Options on the car (that add weight), how loaded up the car is with passengers, fuel and junk, engineering tolerances from car to car, weather, altitude...

Officially car should have 2 passengers and a full tank for 0-60 runs...?

How long does it take to get the extra 2mph diff between a 0-60MPH and a 0-100KPH run (which is what everyone seems to quote now)?

I think Skoda might want to go with a more pessimistic figure given their placing in VAG and their image of practical and exciting. Ford might want to be more optimistic with the ST as it's being marketed as "my first supercar" or racecar for the streets.

Notice I say might. I don't want to suggest underhandedness, just speculating on Autocars figures quoted above. I think the long term 4-car vRS estate mentions pessimistic Skoda figures, but I may be mis-remebering... :)

Now that I think about it, the ST I drove didnt 'feel' as if it accellerated as fast as the vRS.......unless it was at high revs.

Second gear and a hefty prod of the right hoof gets the vRS sitting down at the back pretty quick!

Inertia to overcome with the extra cylinder and weight in the ST's engine??????

I've timed mine consistently on a GTech meter at 5.65 seconds to 60 mph.

Who's timed them then? :)

Well stepping through the frames in VirtualDub shows that the 100km mark on the speedo was crossed at 7.3s ...

Yes 6.6 average, over 5 runs, the quickest was a 5.8, but we put that down to the handling of the stopwatch, but we got close to it again. As I said in another comment, we weren't expecting great accuracy, but the car just felt like it flew along. My mate is really struggling with the ST3, we feel it's a fault, but Ford say it's not.

Not got a 0 - 60 time, but just got back from having a powergraph done at Noble Motorsport in Chesterfield.

They recon that my standard vRS produces 211BHP @ 5688rpm & 218lbft @ 3628.

The the power line is just a beautiful straight line from about 2,000rpm to 5,250, then just levels off and drops back a little (7bhp) until the red line. The torq line averages 210 across the same rev range, but does drop off a fair bit after that (45lbft).:D Considering how hot a day it is I thought this was good; I guess on a slightly cooler day it might even be slightly more!:D

Does that seem about par for the course? I know VAG group underestimate output a bit (had a standard Bora 150 TDI which was plotted at 179bhp!), but was very happy with this as a starting point! Oh and I waited until I had covered over 6,000 miles before hand!

I suspect every engine will be slightly different with some a little below and some a little above the standard outputs

211 sound nice though :)
