Rear 12V socket removal

Featured Replies

I want to replace my rear 12V socket with twin USB socket, does anyone know how to remove the existing socket without the £30+ removal tool?

Depends how destructive you want to be....nice idea though; wish I'd thought of that. I just bought Belkin plug-in units which give off the same sort of power. Very small and can leave them in the plug or in the cubbyhole easily enough.

Would it not be easier just to buy a flush fitting adaptor?

e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255973877338

I have the flush Belkin one at the moment but want 2 USB-C sockets. I don't think there is a flush twin USB-C adaptor that still allows the cover to close

Oh yeah you're right - that's nuts. I bought the 42w USBA and USBC one - have plenty of USBA-USBC cables so can just use different cable for the different ports

This one: Clickety click

I replaced the rear 12v socket with a Dual QC USB ports on Gandalf a couple of years ago.

It sits flush.

I have a 90-deg cable which allows me to close the compartment so it is out of sight.

U can read about wat I did here.

Ah! Remove the tray first rather than the socket, I will give that a go, thanks!

@JR RS it looks like you used the existing loom and wired that to the new socket, is that correct?

Removing the tray was easy enough, removing the socket from the tray not so. There are 2 clips holding the black plastic to the tray but they don't retract?

Removing the 12v socket was a pain as I assumed it all came out as one piece. It doesn't! Pop the metal part out then the plastic surround comes out easily. Handily there's a plug to unclip so you can just remove the whole lot and do the wiring on a bench.

Hi @petrolcan , I saw your post above in @JR RS thread. Do you remember how to remove the metal part, I've been trying all sorts of ways for 2hrs and it won't budge!

@Dave77 - I butchered mine out cause I wasn't planning to reuse it. I too couldn't work out how to free it.

As for the wiring, the USB socket comes with a black connector that plugs into the existing 12v socket wiring loom.

The twin USB socket got delivered today. I ended up breaking the plastic on the old 12V socket to remove it from the tray.

It was probably a 30 minute job in total if you exclude the 2+ hrs I wasted trying to remove the old 12V socket without damaging it 🤣

@JR RS Did you manage to get the plastic nut in behind the new socket to secure it? The one I had was obstructed so wouldn't spin. The hole in the tray isn't a full circle, it has a flat section, which makes the new socket secure enough without the nut as you have to force it in.

@Dave77 - nicely finished there. 👍

I don't remember if I had a locking nut behind it - it's been a while since I installed this.

You would need to get hold of a removal tool like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/BGS-9203-Cigarette-Lighter-Removal/dp/B075DM7PKD

I don't know if you can buy the cover separately though, you may need to replace the whole unit.
There is a cover on here but it looks different to mine https://www.skoda-parts.com/spare-part/5j0864137c9b9-cover-skoda-36351.html

It looks like the above just clips on rather than a flap, might be an easier solution for you!

Thanks @Dave77 I did read this but this is not the same area in the car. This is looking at the rear centre console as opposed to the boot. I will take photos and add them to my post. If I figure out a solution Ill add it to my thread too, I cant be the only person with this issue.

I changed mine as my cover also snapped off.

In truth I should have just left it alone as I dropped a screw deep into the boot and had to dismantle most of trim to get to it

If I remember correctly, you need to loosen one part of the trim(loads of screws) then unlock it from the back, I undone the screw by the 12v thinking you needed to but you don’t until the final part.

Unfortunately that’s all I remember as I got into a proper hulk mode thinking it would be super easy but turned into a nightmare

Also remember to remove the fuse as it’s permanently live, which I forgot and blew a fuse

Thanks @Danoid I'll be honest im considering to tidy up the trim piece with a dremel and leave it. Im quite worried that I might cause an issue to the back seat latch release on the same panel.

Yes agreed thanks it will be cleaner. I don't know why they added a flimsy spring latch to it.

I am doing this currently and have been able to remove the socket cleanly, so if anyone is thinking of doing it, there are 2 tabs from the black plastic which holds the metal socket itself in place.

Slide a thin flat head screwdriver and release these tabs, then it slides out. Then you can remove the black plastic surround, reason you can't remove it is due to it being held in by the metal socket and then it all comes out.

Photos for helping with the words..
