Hi there, Thinking of getting a 4x4 for next winter but would prefer a full 4x4 system not haldex. Does anyone know if skoda/vw actually do a proper 4x4 like landrover etc or are they all haldex based. I drive octavia mk2 at the moment.

The only Torsen controlled VW Group 4X4 are the ones with North<>South engine installations.

So that means all East<>West, or transverse engined VW Group cars are Haldex controlled.

Thanks, That makes sense. I will look into it further. As most cars etc you come accross these days are FWD with transverse engines it might be difficult to find one. I just fancied a more aggresive 4x4 system similar to Landrover with diff lock and selectabale high low ratio.

Land Rovers if that is 90 / 110 so Defenders did not have Diff Locks unless you fitted Air Lockers or Detroit Lockers.

They did have Transfer Boxes.

You can get a Mitsubishi, Toyota etc that has Locking Diffs & Transfer boxes, (Detachable Sway bars even) but do you need that for road use or tracks?

Many run Rear Wheel Drive and then AWD is selected and then the Front Wheel Drive is operating, not Locked Diffs. Ope diffs. (On my Jimny,s i fitted Locking Diffs or Locking Front Hubs, like the early manual lock hubs on early Series Land Rovers.

Maybe a Suzuki Vitara / SX4 or even a Swift / Ignis comes with All-Grip would suit you. But they come with different drive trains / AWD systems.

A Subaru Estate might be just the job.

My Shogun Auto Box. This one did not have Locking Diffs,

TBH.. if you only want it to ensure you can get about in winter weather and snow a haldex based system will do fine. We've had them for the last 17 years on the edge of the Pennines and never once got stuck in bad weather or snow.

Many thanks for the replies. Not looking for anything fancy or modern. something to run in the winter when weather is really bad and also suitable for towing and perhaps launching a boat if I ever get it sorted. Have an early Landrover 110 1987 which is permanent 4x4 with high/low and diff lock in transfer box but its petrol and at 20mpg on a good day plus god knows what the road tax would be these days. Its been off the road in a shed for years. Mechanicly sound but interior is shot due to an invasion of mice. Always meant to do it up but reckon I would have to convert to diesel to afford to run it which would cost a fair bit. Did think of LPG but finding aanyone selling it these days is impossible Didn't think of subaru estate so will have a look

Your entry into non-haldex VW 4x4 SUV is the Touareg.

Or an older VW Passat 4Motion or similar Skoda Superb like round about 2000 - the ones based around B5 Audi A4.

Finding one with not too much rust might be an issue

@Alasdair1 4.6 V8 Auto running on LPG only as it was in my 110.

It had been RPI Engineering,s demonstrator.

It was great when LPG was 50 pence a litre. 200 & a 90 litre tank.

Torsen - quattro system is real 4 wheel drive, when all the time all 4 wheel are engaged in different ratio.

Haldex is system of rear dillerential with hidraulic clutch, in normal use work only front wheels, rear diff is working when some of front wheels slips. but that happens in miliseconds, so you dont feel any slipping.

i had Yeti 2012. with Haldex 4 and enjoyed driving it.
