Why this upgrade? (I'll post some more pictures of the process today)

I drive a Skoda Superb Combi 1.4 iV PHEV Sportline (MQB platform), and while it's a comfortable cruiser, I always felt the stock 288 mm brakes were underwhelming, especially during emergency braking.

As a volunteer firefighter, I sometimes need to get to the station quickly. I found the stopping power to be insufficient for such a heavy car (1.8 tons), I also own a 2004 Audi RS6 C5, which has 8-piston Brembo front brakes — and the difference is night and day. While the RS6 is more powerful and performance-focused, it made me realize just how undersized the brakes on the Superb iV are, especially when you need to stop hard from higher speeds.

That’s what motivated me to upgrade to a proper 340 mm OEM front brake setup, as found on GTI/Cupra models. so I upgraded to a 340 mm front brake setup. Similar to what’s used on Golf GTI / Cupra Leon / Golf GTE. MQB(Evo) platform

I also installed:

• Hardrace rear sway bar

• DCC module tweak greatly improved braking and handling stability.

• Eibach Pro kit

I sourced all parts from a scrapyard, except for the dust shields, which I ordered new from the dealer.
That makes this a budget-friendly OEM-style upgrade — not a fancy aftermarket setup, but a factory-matching improvement that fits perfectly on the MQB(EVO)-based Superb.

Good donor cars to look for:

• Golf 7 GTI

• Cupra Leon (5F or KLCF)

• Golf GTE / Octavia RS / Cupra Formentor
  Most of these use the exact FN3 caliper with 340 mm front discs.

Installation

1. It's easier to turn the wheels in the direction you're going to work on.

2. Raise the car and remove the wheel

3. Remove the old caliper and disc ( You can leave the old caliber hanging on the line until you have the new one in place.)

4. Install the larger dust shield (or trim the old one to fit)

5. Fit the new 340x 30 mm disc

   • Clean the hub and apply copper grease to prevent rust

6. Bolt the caliper carrier in place

   • Torque spec: 200 Nm + 90° angle

7. Mount the brake pads and caliper on the carrier

8. (DIS)Connect the brake hose

   • Keep it upright or temporarily plug it to avoid leaks

9. Bleed the brakes

   • With a helper or transparent hose in fluid

   • Sequence: RR → LR → RF → LF

10. Check for:

    • Leaks,

    • Firm pedal,

    • Fluid level in reservoir

11. Test drive at low speed

    • Verify pedal feel, brake balance, and straight braking

The Superb 280 AWD has 340mm front brakes and 312mm rear. As I understand it, all other Superbs (all FWD and the diesel AWD) have 312mm front discs and 300mm rear. Are you sure yours are 288mm? That seems to be Octavia or Mk2 Superbs from a quick google search.

Also, as donor cars go, the Golf Gti performance pack has 340mm. The standard gti has 312mm. The Golf R has 340mm. As will the gti clubsport.

@MCMikeyJ FWIW, you should really be looking at upgrading the rear brakes too, unless they are the 272mm version.

If OP is upgrading the 288mm fronts, then no. I've never seen any vehicle with larger rear brakes than the front (aside from those with rear brakes only - such as tractors or drag cars).

I'm not clued up on the Superb, but generally, if the fronts are 288mm then the rears will be something like 253mm. If the fronts are 310mm, then the rears could be 272mm, or similar. These will all be solid. It is only on the more powerful cars that you go up to 310mm vented, which will be paired with 340mm at the front.

The largest disc size in the MQB platform is 340mm, aside from the Mk8 R (and similar) with 357mm fronts.

Don't forget to adjust the ABS

The 220 Superb FWD uses 312mm ventilated front discs and 300mm solid rear discs.

The 280 Superb AWD uses 340mm ventilated front discs and 310mm vented rear discs.

According to Jurid/Ferodo/Valeo on autodoc, the Superb MK3 1.4TSI iV 160kW/218PS has 312x25mm front brake discs and 300x12mm rear brake discs.

All Superb MK3 models use the 312x25mm front and 300x12mm rear brake disc combination except for the powerful 2.0TSI 272/280PS 4x4 models which use the bigger 340x30mm front and 310x22mm rear brake disc combination.

The 312x25mm front brake discs could be upgraded to 314x30mm from the Kodiaq. The Kodiaq uses these 314x30mm front brakes discs in combination with the 300x12mm rear brake discs. The 314x30mm front brake discs use the same front brake calipers as the 340x30mm front brake discs. 314x30mm front brake discs enable the use of 16" wheels, whereas the bigger 340x30mm front brake discs need at least 17" wheels to clear the front brake calipers. One owner reported that the 310x22mm rear brakes also need at least 17" wheels to clear the rear brake calipers.

The increase in piston diameter of the front brake calipers when going from 312x25mm front brake calipers to 314x30mm/340x30mm front brake calipers will increase the pressure applied to the front brake pads by 10.8%, ie. (60/57)x(60/57)=1.108033241

The increase in the surface area of the front brake pads when going from 312x25mm front brake calipers to 314x30mm/340x30mm front brake calipers is about 18.2% (estimate only as based on outside lengths and outside heights of front brake pads), ie. (175.2/160.2)x(69.7/64.5)=1.1818018175

314x30mm/340x30mm front brake discs have more effective cooling than 312x25mm front brake discs.

The performance of the 314x30mm front brakes is probably closer to the 340x30mm front brakes than the 312x25mm front brakes.

On the Superb MK3, all the master cylinders use a 23.8mm (15/16"=23.8mm) bore for both the 312x25mm/300x12mm and 340x30mm/310x22mm brake disc combinations.

This is the DCC Slider Mod that gets thrown about. Basically update the software so that rather than have 3 settings of firmness to the shocks you have 15 I think. The standard settings are better than the original boat feeling and you can tweak individual to be any of the new points.

You need the files and VCPro or ODIS to do it though. Have still looked at it but the only place I can find the files is MHHauto forum which you need to pay to register.

Just need Arteon files stuck somewhere like mibsolution and we could be away.

Well that’s interesting. Following on from our messages, I applied to MHH forum but didn’t realise you need to pay for a registration code. Didn’t want to have to do that but if you have the files the only stumbling block is VCPro. It’s £255 to buy one (with 12months free licence) and then £45 subscription after that.

With VCDS already it just isn’t worth it. If I was buying one or the other then I probably would have gone for VCP seeing as there doesn’t seem to be anything VCDS can do that VCP can’t…but that ship has sailed.

What can I say? My equipment costs around €5,000.
