It's better to move this question to Octavia mk2 section.

Flagging for this to be moved to Octavia MK2 section to Admin.....

Try parking it up either in a garage with dry floor or covered car park over night and see where the coolant is dripping from. It will give you a rough idea where to look. If its losing an entire tank overnight then it should be noticeable on the dry ground. Check for crystals around pipe joins etc as well. I have used cardboard in the past to check for leaks but needs a dry night. Last leak on mine was from base of rad where fan switch is fitted.

Given how much it is losing I'm surprised it isn't obvious as there will be a lot of staining

Is the oil contaminated or does a lot of steam come out of the exhaust?

Coolant pressure bottle? The thing the coolant is poured into that is made of plastic and is susceptable to fracturing.

When parked a leak may not be detectable as a crack would only open up when the coolant temperature is hot and the coolant pressure is high. ~£15.00 for a replacement part and easy to replace.

Whilst performing the repair you could also replace the washer bottle feed pipe as I can see that is also knackered and has a big hole in it.

Grand ma this time - not my smelling

If theres an expansion hose from top of coolant vessel try puting the open end in a plastic bottle to see if your losing any while driving. It could be a cylinder head failure and its exhaust gas over pressurising the system or a failed release cap on the vessel and its dumping coolant. If its either once cool the level will drop to zero.

Sniffer kits are cheap enough these days, I'd start there personally.
