Auto folding mirrors question

Featured Replies

Hi Folks. Just bought a Superb 2.0tdi DSG on a 16' plate having just sold my 20 Yo Fabia Vrs which I'd owned for some time.

Anyway, I might be me, but I can't seem to be able to get the door Mirrors to fold in automatically when locking the car? I have the fold option enabled on the mirror switch and in the mirror option within the screen menu. I am doing something wrong? I presume it has this option as the drivers door switch has a position for this function? Thanks.

What specification Superb do you have?

Move the mirror control knob to the 0 position. Turn the ignition on. Now turn the mirror adjustment knob to bottom left position; do the mirrors fold in? If not, the switch might be broken or there could be a fault in the wiring.

Hi Numskull, thanks for your reply. The spec is a 2.0tdi Dsg SE L executive. (I think it has this option as the switch shows the folding mirror symbol at around the 7 o'clock position)

I have tried as you suggested and it has made no difference. Means there's a fault I presume? Thanks.

Actually......... Forget that comment.

I've just tried it for a second time and it seems to have reset and is now working fine.

Thanks for your help. 😃

Hi There,

New owner of a 2018 SE L Exec and my mirrors were going crazy; not folding, switched to right would control left mirror (but only in some directions, sometimes) and reverse dip not working.

The car is booked in with the main dealer I bought it from, however after finding and clearing around 15 faults with OBDEleven, the mirrors have been working perfectly for a few days.

I'll not cancel the service appointment until next week, as I want to make sure everything's OK for a little while, but so far, I guess clearing the faults has made the car happy again - I ran another scan a couple of days after and only a couple of unrelated faults popped up!

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Nick

This made sound strange but twist the knob on all directions moving the joystick in all positions. Then pull up on the knob.

This has happened to mine a few times, performing this trick seam to fix it 😁😁

I can only assume there's some corrosion on the switch.

Following up on this, I fitted a Nextbase dashcam with hardwire kit, connected to the cigarette lighter fuse (not knowing it’s a permanent live). Dashcam was removed from my previous car and had a knackered battery, so always needed to be connected to power.

Dashcam was overheating, stopped working and the mirrors stopped working again…dashcam disconnected, and after a couple of drives the mirrors are working as they should again.

I reckon it could be battery on its way out as it’s original, and the drain from the dashcam was causing issues. When they were playing up before, I’d just bought the car, so battery was probably in a bad state from the car sitting around and only doing short journeys.

I’ve already clocked over 1k miles in the month I’ve owned it - it only did 3k last year, and 5k the year before, so not expecting the battery to be in great condition!

Hope that helps.

Makes sense - almost all posts with electrical gremlins are in the majority battery running out, or more mechanical are wheel speed sensor packing up.

Just a point of note.

There is an option in the settings regarding the movement of the mirrors on locking. Might be worthwhile that's selected if you have more problems.

And ironically just after cancelling the appointment with the garage, my mirrors have started playing up again today after behaving themselves perfectly for the past couple of weeks!

Mine has suddenly started doing all of this.

I liberally sprayed into the control switch a load of contact cleaner and it worked fine afterwards.

Two weeks later it's playing up again. I am away at the moment so can't use contact cleaner today, but will bet it will fix it again and (in my case) it's just four years of dirt, grit, dust, sand, sweat(!), food, other stuff, getting in there.

The diagnosis on mine was that it needs a new nearside mirror, which is being replaced under warranty!

Interesting because that mirror does make a bit of graunching noise and moves a bit roughly when folding in and out.

And neither mirrors were working when I picked it up (great, as they had obviously seen the fault), but they were working again by the time I got home!!!

Just waiting for the call to get it booked in to be fixed.

For future readers with the same problem...

I never did spray anymore contact cleaner. I took to leaving the control in the 12 o clock position (I.e. not controlling anything) and moving the knob up/down/left/right as well as pushing it down/releasing back up many times and that has done the trick in getting it going again.

Now on drives I just wiggle that a few times and so far it has stopped any reoccurrence.

Given my experience and what I have read here and elsewhere, for anyone with the same issue I do recommend spraying contact cleaner under the knob and doing some vigorous wiggling of it before getting into removing trim or buying replacements. It's quite possibly just the dirt etc I described earlier simply stopping a good contact from being made.

Just like I said previously 😁

Thank you all. Yes, it seems to be working fine now, after the joystick 'wiggle' but if it happens again I will try some contact cleaner. Many thanks. 😊

Yep, the dealer replaced the joystick in mine the other day (not the mirror, as I was told), and all’s working well…apart from the big gouge on the control panel plate, which they are replacing!
