Skoda 1.2 CGPA Rattling Problem

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and I have a problem I can't solve. Unfortunately, mechanics aren't doing their jobs well anymore. We have to find the solution ourselves :) The sounds in the videos I sent seem to be coming from the lower rear part of the engine, not the upper part. Has anyone else experienced this and can help?

Sounds a bit like the timing chain is loose! Not sure on your engine but some also had seperate chain driven oil pump that is prone to rattle as well.

@Alasdair1 You may be referring to the hydraulically-operated timing tensioner fitted to some engines with cam driven chains.

I don't know if CGPA actually has one, but they have been known to fail.

A look at online images of CGPA (or PB) timing chain tensioners suggests to me that they are the hydraulic type.

I had it in my head that its a timing chain on that engine but also has a seperate chain that drives the oil pump which I read are known to rattle.

Correct, main chain has hydraulic tensioner, oil pump has a more basic 'springy bent bit of metal' tensioning arrangement for its chain, I seem to remember.

The deep-tone knocking noise sounds quite worrying, if that's the one the video is trying to demonstrate. Not sure what might cause that.

How many km has the car travelled?

In your video clip you say something and then the sound gets worse. Are you doing anything that causes the sound to get worse.

Sounds like 'throttle up' then the engine speed is increased. Bad misfire and sounds like a bag of spanners!

Dont suppose its a DMF rattling about in neutral?

Thank you for your answers. I am still investigating the problem. A mechanic said it could be the manifold. The noise only occurs when I press the gas pedal, and it disappears completely when I take my foot off the gas at a speed of 80 km/h. The noise increases with the gas response.

The strange part is that there are no signs of malfunction, no problems such as oil depletion, water depletion, or excessive fuel consumption.
